Hello!

We absolutely love our Mouths of Mums community of reviewers! Your photos, videos and reviews help other mums make decisions on what to buy – which is why it’s so important to us that your reviews are the best that they can be!

Consider this your MoM Review Cheat Sheet – with examples of what we’re looking for in a great MoM review, and tips on how to achieve it. The difference between a ‘so-so’ review and a fabulous one is often just a couple of little tweaks. And if we love your reviews, there’s a better chance you’ll be selected for more review opportunities in the future.

Here’s how to take your MoM reviews to the next level, and make them amazing!

1. We love to see your faces!

MoM reviews are all about real people – YOU! A photo or video of you using or speaking about the product is so much more compelling that a lonely shot of the product sitting on a bench. And it’s a chance for you to show off your personality. It also gets you closer to winning our regular ‘Best Reviewer’ prizes!

2. Step into the light!

Natural light is your bestie when it comes to capturing great photos and video. Take your videos and photos near a window, without flash, in the morning or early afternoon.

3. Check your background

Think about how your shot will look. We want you and the product to be the main focus, which means as little background distraction as possible. We’re not after polished, we love real mum-life images, with bright and tidy backgrounds so you and the product shine.

4. Pretend you’re chatting to your bestie

The best reviews are those that are genuine and conversational. So our best advice is to chat about the product the same way you’d tell a friend about it. Be honest – what did you think, what surprised you about the product, how did it make your life easier? And of course, constructive feedback is welcome as well.

5. Make your videos count

We adore getting video reviews, and if you’re making the effort to put one together, here are some easy tips to give it the best chance of being used:

  • Hold your phone vertically so we can share the video on social media – better still ask a friend to film you so you have both hands free
  • Give your front and back phone camera lenses a good clean – no smudges means a clearer video
  • Speak just like you would to a friend – be clear and be yourself!
  • Ensure you have natural light falling onto your face (not behind you). Near a window or somewhere quiet outside is perfect.
  • Film your video where there is minimal background noise
  • Hold the product within the video frame so we can see the product you are talking about
  • Avoid using filters, effects, stickers or text on your videos – we just want to see your amazing personality shine through!
  • Short and sweet is great – think about your 3 main points before you start filming so that your video isn’t too long

When it’s time to upload your video with your review, follow the instructions on screen and wait until the video has fully uploaded. Video files are very big so it might take a few minutes.

6. Have fun!

We love seeing your real and genuine reactions to the products we send you to try, so have fun! For example, you may want to film yourself trying the product for the first time so we get your genuine reaction, and then film another video once you’ve had a chance to try it out for a period of time.

Bonus tip: Share the love!

We all love sharing the products we find useful and fabulous, and there’s no better place to let your friends and followers know about what you just reviewed than by sharing on your own social channels. If you’re in the sharing mood, we would love you to tag Mouths of Mums so we can see you shine on Insta, Facebook and TikTok!

Your amazing reviews, photos and videos are what makes this community so engaging. By taking a few extra minutes to find good light, show your beautiful faces and put thought into your comments, you’re helping other mums make great choices.

We can’t wait to see your next review!

  • I love reading reviews and writing them. Good to read this article and I loved the advice of pretending that you are actually chatting with your bestie. I’ll note these tips so that if I am ever lucky enough to review an item I can make the most of the review and do it justice.

  • Fabulous advice! Probably the other big tip is, keep it simple. Not too many people/ voices. It’s a short video, so it should just be you. Feeling nervous? Eat before you speak and go for a quick walk! Avoid wearing clothing with stripes, busy patterns or logos. You do NOT need to be a model… so go easy on the makeover l make up!

  • Ohhh I love scrolling and seeing a picture of myself haha. I’ve had such a fun time reviewing the products I’ve been lucky enough to be selected for. Initially I was a bit shy and wouldn’t put myself in front of the camera, but I feel so grateful to have the opportunity to try something that I want to give a good review

  • I recently participated in the IGA Black and Gold review and loved every minute of being a part of the the review team. It was such fun being able to explore and find new products at IGA to review. I came away quite surprised by the prices and the value for the amount of money and was happy to share the experience and reviews with this community.

  • I must say, I really enjoy doing MOM reviews! I’ve been a part of the community for many years and have been able to try some fantastic products! Some of them are ones that go on to become new favs in my shopping trolley too. I always like to share a video review too. It’s definitely worth the extra time, I’ve even won a prize before!

  • I love writing reviews, and go to a lot of trouble to create reviews that are well written, comprehensive, and honest. I think I do a good job at that. I’m also good at talking to people one on one or in a small group. But I don’t have good video skills, and I know it. I hope you value the full range of reviewing skills.
