There are so many gorgeous nappy bags available, how do you make the right choice that will go the distance and will meet your needs, as well as those of bub?

If you pick a nappy bag using the same method for picking a new handbag (as a fashion item) you might find that you have an expensive bag that you don’t want or like using. What a waste.

This is the one thing that I wished I splurged on but unfortunately, the pragmatic part of the brain won out and instead of a colourful signature designer bag that I was over the moon about, I ended up with basic black, very plain and entirely serviceable number.

Whatever you decide on, it needs to work. That’s why I’ve put together this list of what to look for in a functional nappy bag – hope it helps:

  • How does it work with your pram – Think about it, you’ll be using your nappy bag when out and about with bub who will generally cruising in the pram. So how the bag works with the pram is paramount. It needs to fit either neatly in the storage area when full or hang over the pram handles. Ideally take your pram to the store to try for size or alternatively ensure you can return it if it’s not a good fit. Try to get the bag out or off in a hurry with one hand (picture a poo disaster) to really test the fit with your pram.
  • Change mat – these are durable, generally match the bag and fit neatly inside and will get hundreds of uses in all sorts of situations. I carry a few of these disposable mats in addition to the mat that comes with the bag for those really messy occasions when you don’t want to be wiping down your lovely one.
  • Sections – great for sorting all the gear you have to carry so it’s easy to find. When you have one hand on baby for stability, it needs to be a one-handed job to reach in and find what you need quickly and easily. Snap lock bags help keep things neat inside.
  • Insulated compartment – perfect for bottle that is already cooled or heated to maintain temperature while out and about.
  • Mum’s essentials area – So you don’t have to manage a handbag as well, nappy bags with a special secure area, for wallet, mobile and keys etc are really handy. This is often on the outside of the bag, but they need to be a little tucked away or well secured with a sturdy strap to prevent pilfering.
  • It is you? – Finally, does this bag express your personality? Would you be happy to carry and use if for the next two to three years or so? Hope so! Because you just never know!

Happy shopping!

  • I can’t believe how many nappy bags there are to choose from these days, and some are so gorgeous too. Might have to have another baby just to justify getting one!

  • I bought a purpose made nappy bag for bub #1. I loved it, it was very fashionable but it wasn’t structured! I found it hard to find things because the sides ‘collapsed’. This time around (and also knowing better and packing less) I bought a gorgeous bag from Colette. Its structured, its fashionable & was 50% off at $27 I’d say its a win/win! I like to update my handbags so the same goes for my nappy bag too. 🙂

  • When I chose nappy bag back then, didn’t really think about fashion style nappy bag. As long as fit in the pram nicely and do the job. It has built in change mat for baby. Now we just use small bag for nappy, cream, change mat etc and put that small bag in my son back pack when we go out.

  • I bought an Isoki about 5 years ago for my first baby. I based my purchase on style rather than functionality. I still love this bag (and it doesn’t look like a nappy bag). I’m about to use it for my third baby.

  • I had to upgrade to a bigger nappy bag to carry essentials for my newborn and toddler. I love the design of the ill Tutu and it is a gorgeous design too.

  • I didn’t get to choose because I had one given to me, but in saying that, it was really functionable with it’s own change mat, somewhere to put the wipes where you could just pull them out of the hole, a small insulated backpack which was detachable, somewhere to clip the keys on and a water proof zip lock bag for dirty nappies.

  • I never had a proper nappy bag with my 2 boys but i think my big bag back then had done the job. It didn’t cost that much and they became beach bag after LOL. Nice artcle though 🙂

  • I had a huge hand bag given to me. When the baby was born i simply decluttered the junk in it and stocked it with baby supplys. Did the job brilliantly.

  • I was given my nappy bag which was great, but I have pretty much given up on using a handbag so if I could choose I would go for one that is still practical but looks less like a nappy bag.

My change mat tip: cut a disposable mat in half and place on top of the mat that comes with your bag. When finished roll them up together. This way there is padding if you need to change bub on the floor but you don’t have to wipe the mat if they have an accident (or just squirm too much!)

  • I wish I had read this before I chose my nappy bag. I think it failed on every single point, but I was too stubborn to admit I bought a dud and buy a new one. I was so relieved when I realised I didn’t have to use it any more!

  • Great tips and comments gals – Thanks for sharing! My Ryco basic black nappy bag from Target has lasted for 8 year (so far). I wish I’d bought something a bit fancier, but I’m not sure it would have lasted so long or if I’d get sick of it!!

  • I was so confused by nappy bags, and couldnt find one in my price range (single mum, full time student) so when I saw a sale on at cotton on online, i found large, black bag with borwn straps for $10! the straps are adjustable and you can make it smaller with the well placed press studs on the sides.. It fits nicely in the back of my prm, or is easy to carry with bub, has side pockets to put my stuff (i dont need much, phone, keys, wallet is all i ever take) and I used an old makeup/pencil case to put nappies, nappy bags in! it is a godsend! and I saved so much money! it has lasted 9 months with no sign of wear and tear, and it doesnt look like a nappy bag!
