We are having a ‘Spring Summer clean’ here at the moment and I decided to find out how to clean our dishwasher naturally – without any chemicals.

What you need:

  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda

Method:

  • Wipe seals and grimy edges with white vinegar.
  • Empty and clean the bottom filters (clean any food away).
  • Pour 1 cup of vinegar and 1/4 cup baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher.
  • Run dishwasher on hot quick cycle.

I tried this today and our dishwasher came up sparkling new, try it and let me know how you go. Please add your comments below.

  • Oh i love this idea and so much cheaper than the products from the supermarket. I am going to try it this weekend as my dishwasher is due for some loving.

  • This is a great, cheap way to clean your dishwasher! However…Vinegar is ascetic acid and baking soda is sodium bicarbonate (ie- chemicals)- the reason this works is due to a chemical reaction. I know it might seem like simple semantics but there is a big difference between “chemicals” and “harmful or harsh chemicals”. Calling this chemical free is incorrect- many people are now hugely paranoid about “chemicals” and in a mostly unnecessary way!

    • To me the word “soda” gives me the impression that it has salt in it. I wouldn’t use it on a metal surface.

      • Do you think just white vinegar and water would work? I don’t use my dishwasher a lot but it has developed a strange smell ???
