Kids love playdough and you don’t need to buy it, you can easily make your own at home today.

What you’ll need:

  • Food colouring
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 4 cups of plain flour
  • 1 cup of warm water
  • 1 1/2 cups of table salt

Method:

1. Pour 1 cup of warm water into a bowl (or separate into more bowls if you want to make more than one colour)

2. Add a few drops of food colouring to the water

3. Add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in total

4. Combine 4 cups of flour and 1/2 cups of salt in a bowl.

5. Add to coloured water and mix.

6. Knead until soft.

It’s now ready to use.

Store the playdough in an air tight container and will last a long time. Personally I find homemade playdough lasts a lot longer, is easier for the kids to use and it’s certainly more cost effective.

  • I had a bit of a fail making this today! I read it wrong and left out half the salt… it took a long time to knead and it didn’t turn out great. Not elastic enough.

Anyone tried it and had success?

  • If any of your family or friends who are likely to play with it, if they have Coelic Disease or wheat intolerance use gluten free flour instead. Some children have a habit of putting their fingers in their mouth. That’s all it takes to make some extremely ill, so much so that they can become dehydrated and need hospital treatment.

  • Used to do this all the time when my kids were younger. Very easy and saves a small fortune too.

  • Yes, we love and use this recipe too all the time. The only thing is that all the colours are mixed with 1x playing in our home 🙂 and gone are the beautiful fresh colours !

  • I love this recipe a of use all the time, only difference is I use gluten free flour which then means you need a little less water. I also add some Cream of Tartar to mine but don’t know that it is necessary.

    • The colours are gorgeous – the trick is keeping the colours separate when playing!

  • Adore homemade play dough! Still love the cooked version for smell and warmth when just cooked. This looks great too, and so easy.
