Ever been stumped by your child’s sweet, innocent face as they try and pin a cheeky act on their sibling? One mum has discovered a brilliant way to tell if kids are telling the truth. And it’s so simple we wish we’d thought of it earlier.

The tip was posted in response to a TikTok asking mums to reveal the most useful lie they’ve ever told their kids. TikTok user Victoria then blew everyone’s mind when she detailed her simple tip.

“I told my children that when they lie, a star appears on their forehead, that only a grown-up can see,” she explained. “So anytime they’re lying to me, they cover their forehead.”

Genius! The video has had more than 20 million views from thankful parents. Other mums then took to the comments to share their useful parenting lies.

“Told my son that when the ice cream truck played music it meant they were out of ice cream.”

“My mum told me when I lie my ears turn pink so I would run around holding my ears.”

“We can’t be awake until the sun is awake.”

“My mum used to tell me if I ate my boogers I would turn into a tree. She said the tree outside was my brother.”

“My mum told me when I lie I grow a dog tail so I’d always look behind me.”

So, what’s the most useful lie you’ve ever told your kids?

  • Lol these are funny indeed ! But I’m with the previous poster that lying to our kids is not the best example and in the end we are their most important role models. That being said, when we talk about the tooth fairy, the Easter bunny or Father Christmas many of us are not fully truthful either

  • hahaha these are hilarious and very comical but I do not believe lying to your kids in any form is a good idea. It is important to be honest and open with your kids as one day they might notice or pick up that you have lied and this is not a good idea.

  • While these are funny, I am not so sure that we should be lying to our kids like this. Our kids rely on us to be reliable and I’m not quite sure it gives the right impression that we lie in order to see if we can catch our kids lying… besides I think mine are a bit old to fall for that!

  • These are hilarious! I’m not yet at the stage where I need to tell little fibs to my toddler, but I’ll have to remember these! Growing up I heard a lot of ‘no, you wouldn’t like it, it’s too spicy!’ for literally anything. Ice cream? No, too spicy. And I believed it haha

  • Santa is making a record of every lie or bad behaviour a child makes, this means no gift for every lie or bad behvior even on birthdays, graduation or any occassion at all.

  • Not sure that tip would work on my 10 yr old. I’m trying to instill in her that if she lies she will receive punishment, but if she tells the truth she may not be punished or receive a lighter sentence, depending on what it is.

  • Not sure lying to them while you are trying to teach them not to lie will help…

  • I’ve definitely lied about parks being shut down or places not being open. Just easier than dealing with the meltdown.

  • I love that idea. My kids are too old for that now but if I tell a lie my cheeks so bright red

  • I don’t think it would work for very long but definitely cute that they cover their forehead.

  • Classic. What a great idea. Must be hard for Mum to keep a straight face when she sees the kids covering their foreheads.
