A teenager has says she’s not sure if she did the right thing, after reporting her pregnant co-worker for sleeping and vomiting on the job.

The 17-year-old says she and her pregnant co-worker both work at a clothing store, and on a recent shift, she discovered the mum-to-be asleep. At first, she simply ignored the situation.

“She was napping in the clothing aisle, and I did not report her because I did not want to cause drama or get reported to HR,” she explained on reddit. “Besides, she was not directly harming me or anyone else.”

But eventually things took a turn, and the teen says she had no choice but to report the expecting mum.

“When I went back, I could see her in a pile of puke, half awake. I found it incredibly gross, and she got puke on some clothing.

“Instead of cleaning it or just reporting the mess, I reported her. She lost her job and texted me saying I was such a drama queen and that she would be surprised if any man ever liked me. Am I the a**hole?”

The confession triggered hundreds of comments, admonishing the teenager for her actions.

“I would have called 911 when I found her on the floor the first time. Napping was an assumption. What if she had passed out?” wrote one person.

“The one time I was laying on the floor at 17 weeks pregnant my fiancé was ready to call an ambulance because I looked unconscious. I’d hope anyone would try to help me if I was on the floor and obviously pregnant/looking asleep,” added another.

What do you think of the situation? Let us know in the comments below.

  • I have so many questions that I would need to be answered before I could really judge this situation. Obviously with someone mentioning 911 this is an American poster. I would say that here in Australia the woman could have gone for wrongful dismissal but then again its hard to say.

  • This sounds like something was actually wrong. She should have checked on her co-worker (who probably would have had a case for unfair dismissal).

  • I don’t think it was right move in this situation.

  • This is interesting and I can’t help but wonder if maybe there’s more to the story?
I don’t necessarily think the teenager did the wrong thing but I think management should have done things a bit differently. I wonder if the pregnant woman had already been given a few warnings and knew she was on her last warning at the shop? If not then I think management could have handled it differently.
I hope the pregnant woman and bubba are ok.

  • I don’t think the mum should of been sacked and I don’t think the 17 year old should be slammed either.

  • I’m not sure she should have been fired for being genuinely sick! That’s on management, not the teenager though.

  • We go to work, to do exactly that, work, not to nap. Bad enough once, but more often, than to actually be sick, something is not right. The teen did not get the pregnant worker sacked, they got themselves sacked. If they were unwell they should not have been at work.

  • If she was genuinely napping then sure, report her. But then finding her lying in vomit makes me think there was a medical thing going on that she wouldn’t have needed assistance for so wasn’t intentionally trying to get out of work.

  • We can all say we would’ve handled it differently but she was a teen and probably thought what she did was best

  • It’s not fair that the teenager was put in such a position in the first place. It’s not like it was the first time this had happened but my problem is that the pregnant woman was given the sack. Isn’t that discrimination?

  • Hard for a teenager to know in this situation. I would like to think there was a discussion had before she was fired.

  • I just hope the employer investigated both sides

  • I can understand her doing that, but both her and HR could have done things differently…

  • Probably could have been handled a bit differently.

  • Probably should’ve checked if she was alright first?

  • WOW – Where is the compassion – why would you report someone for being sick other than to assist with her been able to go home to rest.

  • I think that the employer might have handled it differently. It’s certainly not up to a 17 year old to know how to handle the situation.

  • Common-sense would’ve been to check if she was okay first. This person is a teen and often kids don’t have a full grasp of what pregnancy can be like so her work should’ve been the one to lead in the correct approach here. They’ve let both employees down by not showing the teen the appropriate way to handle a situation like this and not supporting an expectant staff member who may have needed medical help.

  • If a pregnant woman is lying down in vomit, first thing is to check if she is ok and if she needed any assistance. Not just “report” her.
Secondly, the employer shouldn’t of just “fired” her. They should of discussed what the options they can do as the job could of been her main source of income.
Communication was definitely lacking and sure a misunderstanding was taken when she was reported.

  • Tricky one. I would have checked on her vitals and when all good then I would wake her. I would offer my help to clean the puke up (not do it for her her, but make clear it needs to be cleaned and can’t be left..
