A mum’s rant about trending boy names has attracted scathing comments from other mums, who happen to the like the names that she says are better suited to dogs.

The mum unleashed on a parenting forum, revealing the types of names she dislikes.

“I really hate the latest trends in boys names,” she wrote. “Is it just in my town that all the boys are called things like Henley, Harvey, Harley, Bailey, Hunter, Riley, Marley etc etc …all seemingly interchangeable with dogs.

“Maybe I’m having a Tuesday night attack of the unreasonables but I kid you not I was at a park today and heard a woman call her son Statham. I’m thinking if I have a boy I’ll have to call him Martin or something just to readdress the balance. I accept it’s unreasonable, but anyone agree?”

It seems, not a lot of people do actually agree.

“My son has one of the names above and I love it,” one mum replied. “It’s also nothing at all to do with you what other people call their children. You sound really horrible and I suggest you find something else more important to worry about.”

It also prompted others to reveal the unique names they’d also heard.

“I met a kid in a park named Gallant but pronounced Ger larnt I sh*t you not.”

“I know someone who called her baby Pippin. That’s his full name.”

  • I quite like all of those names. No one is ever going to love every single name!

  • My suggestion? Don’t go to a park or anywhere else that you could hear names that offend your delicate ears and sensibilities. Truly, there is nothing wrong with those names. If you want to rant about bad baby names go rant at Elon Musk!

  • The names she listed aren’t that wacky. Nothing on Tragediegh levels. I’m about to have my first and I wanted a name that is slightly different but nothing too wild. There are enough Robert’s and Aaron’s in the world that traditional names won’t disappear.

  • I think those names are quite nice. I like traditional names but those names are definitely not out there and ridiculous. Weird you think they are dog names… so what people call their dogs normal names all the time. Not a lot of dogs get called buster and spot!

  • My grandson is called Riley, I dont think it’s very dog like at all. And so what to what you think. Why do people go out of their way to be mean and nasty

  • you lead a sad life if you get that worked up about what others call their children!

  • They aren’t horrible names and at least the spelling is the regular spelling to make it easier!

  • It’s the parent’s choice in the end

  • A lot of dogs are named Sam and Bob also

  • Isn’t it funny how names can come in trends. Who would’ve thought that so many people can choose the same names as many other new parents at the same time.

  • We are all entitled to an opinion, but maybe better sounding names will come back into vogue. Of course, it would have to be an equal sounding name as boys are put down if they are too masculine these days.

  • I think people should have the right to change their name before 18…

  • It doesn’t matter what I think, it’s up to the parents

  • What parents choose to name their children is their own business. I only think that they should think about what impact choosing that name would have on them at school and long-term.

  • Did someone literally name their child Statham? That’s a surname of an actor. smh! That is going so far. Names like Harvey (My nephew’s name), Harley, Bayley (a cousin of mine) and Riley were big trendy names in the early 90’s. Even had a girl at school name Pippin. There was a girl named Bilby. So some of these names are just become popular again. Give it time and we will see names like Marlene, Doris, Betty, Dorothy, Eugene, Richard… Etc. At the end of the day there are more things to worry about but I can understand why you would be so over the trendy names. Everyone tends to want the same and be the cool parent. Nothing simple. They change the traditional spelling or there is no meaning. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and their choices so its ok for you to vent your thoughts. Not everyone will agree with you but that is your honest opinion.

  • I think instead of worrying about what’s “on trend”, people should just pick a name for their child that they absolutely love, regardless of trends or what anyone else thinks. I named my son Noah as I absolutely loved the sound and meaning of the name, not realising that it was one of the most “on trend” names for that year. It was after the Notebook movie came out, so probably would explain a lot ???????? In his year level at school there are a few Noah’s ????

  • Why care about what someone else chooses to name their child. Not my business and actually has absolutely no impact.

  • I guess some people have nothing better to do in their lives, than complain about random stuff that doesn’t affect them. Must be boring!

    • There are definitely better things to do that bring joy.

  • I prefer more traditional names generally speaking but most of the names shes mentioned are quite normal in my opinion. I have heard a few “out there” names but each to their own I guess.

  • Well I named my dog Arthur and when my husband calls the dog to come he goes arf arf arf I think it is so good to get my husband to bark like dog . Who cares about names but remember the child has to grow up with it so consider the child and not Yourself
