Essential oils seem to be the latest craze. And they aren’t just more products that get pushed onto you by well-meaning family and friends who have become involved with multilevel marketing companies either. They are everywhere, on social media, online and in store!

Gone are the days where they were something which you only saw your grandmother using.

I’m not trying to dispute the benefits of these oils. There are just as many people who swear by them as there are people who believe they’re nonsense. It’s the same with most things really.

What I will question however is the age range on these products!

Not to suggest that they aren’t safe for all ages, it’s just… since when am I even old enough to buy essential oils!? When did they stop being reserved for the older generation and start being used by men, women and children of all ages?!

How did they become cool all of a sudden!?

…or have I just become really old…

Is It A Fad?

Have the younger generations tapped into the secrets of our grandparents? Are we becoming wiser? Or are essential oils just another fad for the younger generation which will pass as quickly as it came?

Whatever the case may be, they make me feel old! Thinking about them makes me question when my interests changed from keeping up to date with the latest high tech devices, to doing research into essential oil blends!

I don’t even know who I am anymore and I bet there’s an oil combination which will help me to find myself again!

Perhaps there needs to be an age restriction placed on these oils, similar to the one placed on alcohol and cigarettes so that people know when they’ve hit that golden essential oil age.

They Make Me Feel Old

I mean I love the idea of them, who knows, they may even do what they claim they do. Either way, however, they make me feel old… and maybe I am… or perhaps I need to put a different perspective on it and allow them to make me feel wiser…

For goodness sake anything is going to smell better than this baby spit up on my shoulder… the tuna and mayo which has been wiped on my hair and the grilled cheese which is somehow stuck to the front of my shirt. Yes, there has to be a blend of oils to combat the blend of smells my children thoughtfully pass on to me, I’m sure of it…

Are you into Essential Oils? If so, what is your favourite scent? Tell us in the comments below?

  • Its not about using something your grandmother used (are we talking lavender here?) It\’s about looking for something that is natural and reducing the toxic load on our system. We use anti bacterial crap, and hand sanitisers filled with a shit storm of stuff and don\’t even bat an eyelid, yet we seem to have more things wrong with us than ever before. Maybe grandma was onto something??? Like anything, if used incorrectly, there will be adverse affects…. you don\’t take 20 panadol cause you want your headache gone quicker, so don\’t overdo it on the oils either, they are of the earth and are pure and can be potent. Used correctly, they can be life changing.

  • Not really. I have a couple that I won in a competition and I have an oil burner that was gifted to be. I prefer my Scentsy wax melts and warmer.

  • I use essential oils for certain things but I don’t think of them as a ‘fix everything’ type of thing. I use Lavender and Frankincense for sleep and symptoms of mild anxiety but that’s pretty much it. I have used blends in the past but honestly did’t really notice much of a difference while using them.

  • Essential oils can be dangerous to pets too.
I use eucalyptus oil for cleaning, tea tree oil as antiseptic, lavender oil helps me relax, I love the smell of orange oil. Ah, and rosemary is good against dandruff. That’s it. 🙂

  • I use essential oils for making some cleaning products. There are certain oils that I wouldn’t diffuse around young ones, eucalyptus being one of them. Lavender is probably my favorite scent though

  • I like lavender and it really helps me to relax and helps with headaches, but I dont think they all have miracle cures

  • I like to use them in my diffuser but I’m not convinced by them having miracle cures. If they make you feel better or more relaxed then go for it I say!

  • Essential oils do have some benefits but I don’t believe they are the miracle cures some people make them out to be

  • Some people burn natural oils to make their house smell nice. Honestly some of them smell horrible to other people.
Yes, natural oils and natural herbal medications can make some people very ill if they have other medications they need to take whether they be non natural or natural.
My GP recommends and prescribes natural ones where they are guaranteed suitable. If in doubt he prescribes different ones

  • I know this is tongue in cheek, but given some can be dangerous if used inapproprtely, maybe we should consider it.
