Warning to parents over this dangerous shopping trolley habit.

Lindsey Wisnewski is warning others of the dangerous everyday habit that is putting babies at risk of serious injury.

car seat

The mum-of-two had placed her baby capsule on top of the shopping trolley and was strapping her preschooler into his car seat when a gust of wind caused the trolley to tip, sending the trolley and its contents crashing into her car and onto the footpath.

“I was strapping my preschooler into his car seat and the wind slightly caught one wheel and the weight of the infant car seat pulled the whole thing down over the curb,” says Lindsey.

“Please, please, please parents do not put the carseat on the top part of the cart! Any carseat technician will tell you that it’s extremely unsafe.”

Lindsey says her ‘public service announcement‘ was posted without judgement, as she had done exactly this with both her boys.

“Up until about two years ago, I thought the seat was safe since it clicks into place. But the car seat in the picture was ‘locked’ into place,” warns the Ohio mum.

“And sure, had my baby actually been in the seat, I wouldn’t have left it unattended. But accidents happen in the blink of an eye.”

  • I don’t ever take my car seats out! I think it’s a bit dangerous to get ones like this as hope sturdy could they be being put in out all the time. I just think it would eventually wear down but I could be wrong…

  • I never had one of those types of baby capsules always a seat that was stuck in the car. Didn’t realise people put them on top of the trolley. How scary!

  • I never used baby capsules like this one. I do wish all shopping trolleys had brakes on them though. I know some do, but the majority of them where we shop don’t, and I have to lock my foot through the bottom of the trolley to stop it rolling away while I’m loading groceries and children into the car if I’m unlucky enough to have to use the bottom car parks on a slope. No accidents yet, but it could easily happen.

  • I see mums constantly leaving their little one in one of those seats that are mounted on the trolleys. It is worse when they are sitting in the seat compartment of those trolleys. A child leant over in one when I was in the supermarket one day and the trolley to my horror was about to topple. I grabbed it just in time otherwise the small child would have fallen out onto the floor.

  • I saw a guy lose control of a trolley one day on a wet slippery bitumen surface that was on a “downhill” slope. Fortunately there was no children in it. Even if one had been stapped in the child would have been absolutely petrified. people walking ahead of him heard him yelling and helped him regain control of it just as he fell.

  • I haven’t even seen trolleys that can do this.

  • I have only seen one coles store with brakes on the shopping trolleys all the trolleys that had child seats in had brakes, I was extremely lucky I was fumbling for my keys to unlock my car and had let go of the trolley handle and my toddler in the trolley kicked his little legs as I was chatting with him and away down the hill went the trolley missed all the other cars it was a steepish hill and I finally grabbed him just as it tipped as the trolley hit a rock in the car park he though it was the funniest thing with mummy running after him so now I always wear clothes with a pocket in that I put my car keys in instead of in my handbag and always suggest to the stores that they have trolleys with brakes on but so far no joy!

  • It’s a good warning to never leave a shopping trolley unattended if a baby is strapped in it.
