Let’s face it, groceries aren’t exactly cheap right now, so making the most of our meals is a must. But is washing and reusing pasta going a step too far?

A US-based mum has shared her ‘waste not, want not’ tip for repurposing her son’s leftover pasta, and it’s left the internet divided.

“OK I need you guys to settle a debate for me,” she explains at the start of her TikTok video. She explains that she wanted a different pasta dish to the one her son had for his lunch. Given that he didn’t touch his pasta, she decided to reuse it.

“I decided to save the pasta by rinsing off the sauce and then creating the pasta I wanted to have.”

The mum is seen rinsing the pasta off in a colander in the sink, removing most of the sauce. Then reusing it to make her own pasta dish.

“But my husband thinks that it’s really weird that I did this. Was looking at me like I was crazy while I was rinsing off this pasta. So I gotta know is it weird or is it a good way to reduce food waste?”

  • To each their own I say 🙂

  • Yeah, that’s a bit gross. I’d just freeze the leftovers as is or serve the dish up to son again. Recooking it would overcook the pasta.

  • I wouldn’t wash and reuse but I would definitely freeze it for next meal. I do that all the time with left over meals.

  • I prefer to freeze left over pasta, but don’t see anything wrong with her practice

  • A bit extreme. Just reheat the leftovers for him the next day and then it is not wasted.

  • Yuck no thank you. I would just eat as it was. Washing sauce off to save money doesn’t really make sense because you’re wasting the sauce when you can just cook 30c more pasta for yours. Keep theirs in the fridge for another day

  • It’s a little extreme but there are a few benefits. Reduced waste, resistant starch GI, saves some coins.
I rinse our leftover pasta to feed it to my chickens but only because I don’t want them eating chicken!

  • Yeah this is just too weird for me! Pasta is cheap, make your own dish and save that bowl for your sons lunch the next day if you don’t want to waste it

  • I get it but it’s a no from me.

  • Ok this is definitely not for me! No thank you

  • Omg I wouldn’t do that!

  • Lol why not done it before. You reheat it after.

  • Can you Just eat it as is or prepare it for your son how you like it? Definitely food safety concerns here.

  • Wouldn’t the pasta be too hard or even a risk of food poisoning? Yes it’s weird but when you are going through hard times it’s understandable.

  • I guess you wash pasta anyway after cooking it so this might not be any different, really?!

  • Gosh, as a mumma who eats her toddlers leftovers, I wouldn’t have an issue eating the pasta in its unwashed condition lol

  • I mean I get it but no, I couldn’t do it.

  • No, I could not stomach washed pasta! It will keep for a couple of days in the fridge….just reheat and eat it later.
