An irate mum has vented her frustration at the range of girls’ toddler shorts currently being stocked in Kmart, saying she’s had to resort to buying boys’ shorts.

Sonographer Elli Tamar, who has a following for more than 60,000 on Instagram and 220,000 on TikTok, shared a video asking Kmart to ‘please explain’.

“I’m buying some summer clothes for my toddler at Kmart and check this out,” she starts the video.

The Melbourne mum-of-two then shows several different shorts from the girls’ section, saying, “What the *&^% is this? What two-year-old is wearing disco booty shorts? Her butt cheek will actually be hanging out of these. The crotch is longer than the shorts.”

Elli then explains that she has to buy her daughter a pair of boy’s shorts, ‘just to make them decent for a child’.

Her video has been met with hundreds of messages with similar concerns.

“Kmart really needs to do better. Each spring/summer the shorts seem to just get shorter. They at least had some longer bike shorts this season but the quality isn’t great,” one mums commented.

“What in the fresh hell?” said another.

Mum Nicole Leek also took to social media to share her concern about the range of shorts.

“I don’t want to be that person, but I was genuinely shocked while shopping in Kmart Australia today,” she wrote on Facebook.

“In what universe does a 1 year old girl (or any child for that matter) need a pair of denim shorts with a 2 inch inseam? These were, by the way, the only denim shorts I could find available for girls.

“Meanwhile, the boys shorts were all of a completely functional length. How on earth is this ok? Why in this day and age are clothes like this still being made and marketed? I can understand this style being available in the teenage section, but for 1-7 year olds. Could we not have had the same material and frayed edges, but in a length that at least covers their nappies?”

“I suppose my biggest question is: who are we dressing them this way for? And how did so many people look at these shorts before they made it to a shelf and think that this was ok?”

Mouths of Mums has contacted Kmart for comment.

  • Bad taste. Little kids need comfortable and sturdy clothing, not poor fashion statements. Let them be kids.

  • Yes, I agree. Kmart has often had a problem with the length of products – you can pick up two things in the same size and find the length differs by several centimetres. But this is quite ridiculous. I never really noticed when my daughter was young because she wore her brother’s hand me downs.

  • I don’t really like seeing shorts like these on teenagers so I definitely wouldn’t want to dress a 1 – 7 year old girl in them. They seem to make the boys shorts in better styles and lengths. Wonder who chooses the styles of girls clothes and if they’d be comfortable letting their girls (or boys for that matter) wear such short shorts

    • I am not a fan on these shorter styles for a number of reasons and I do wonder; is it possibly a cost effective strategy to use less material in particular items of clothing. I have noticed this occurs with adult clothing in many stores too and do wonder if they have sometime forgotten to finish making some tops!

  • This is terrible and I’m glad other mums are sensible enough not to put their babies in these clothes. Seeing what a lot of young teens wear out is bad enough, let along toddlers in short shorts. Parents need to boycott so they stop selling these and make longer cloths for small children.

  • The fact they can sell these sorts of clothes frustrates me. The fact that there’s people who actually dress their kids in these sorts of clothes infuriates me.
This is the very reason why my daughter lives in bike shorts.
Side note, Elli is a fantastic content creator and I’m glad someone that has a platform has spoken out about this subject.

  • We always buy shorts that have good coverage and also are practical for being able to move about and to engage in outdoor activities. We shop in all departments and ignore if clothes or items are labelled for particular people. Clothes need to be practical and affordable and not a latest style or fad.

  • I’m honestly over the new styles coming out. Especially all these cropped shirts and tiny shorts. Even my daughter feels it’s inappropriate for girls her age (11) to be wearing some of the clothing that is made these days. But in saying that there is still a broad range of things for everyone.

  • My guess is that these horrible looking shorts are part of mini-me styles that their parents [mums] wear themselves and they want to dress their little girl in similar clothing to their own. I really couldn’t imagine anything worse, and I would hate to see mum and daughter looking like this. There is time enough to run around in ‘look at me’ gear when they are older.

  • I suppose I was lucky enough to buy the shorts for my two before they changed the styles. Just horrible.

  • WE should get the Kmart staff to get their own children in photo shoot

  • I totolly agree with Elli. Why make these type of skimpy clothes for our little girls? I just don’t get it. As a Grandma of 3 girls, I will be looking very carefully at what is around as I collect some clothes for them for Christmas, I definitely will not be buying these types of shorts for them.
To the people of KMart that do the marketing…would you like to dress your toddler in these skimpy shorts that don’t look like they will even cover their behinds?

  • Look its not only Kmart selling these short like this and not to mention the skimpy tops too

  • This is disgusting. Child exploitation is a thing and there are plenty of perverts out there. You don’t know who could be watching your lovely family outing with your young children. It’s not okay for children to be dressing like this and Kmart needs to do better. The concerning thing is that there must be a market or Kmart wouldn’t sell them at all. Someone out there is buying it…

    • My goodness this was on my mind too. There are so many sick and disgusting people out there, you just don’t know who is watching or taking videos extra. Giving our kids clothes like this to wear is not helping this and it is setting our kids up with stuff that they think they should be wearing because it is in stores. Kmart won’t be getting my business.

  • I think that the product range is based on supply and demand. When a product is selling well, the supply may be increased. When people continue to buy the product, production and presenting of the product will continue. In the case the product hasn’t been sold well and the figures show that there is little or no demand for the product, it will most likely go in sale and not be sold again.

    • Don’t buy it when you don’t like it ! There are other options, like buying a boy shorts indeed or you could buy a full length trouser and cut it off to the length of your liking. Or look into a different type of short. Personally I like the bike style short for kids, the are comfy and are a bit longer

  • And we wonder where the pedophiles find their victims, imagine sending your daughter to daycare in these clothes

  • Unfortunately there. Are Probably some parents out there who would love to dress their little girls up in mini me outfits. Hopefully not enough of them for Kmart to realise they have dropped the ball on this one and will have lots of stock left on the rack at end of season.

  • Can’t agree more that is way too short for kids

  • Elli, I tend to agree. With you. My daughter is 15 & even I have trouble finding shorts a decent length for her. I want shorts closer to the knee & not crotch! When our eldest was little, if she wore short shorts, she HAD to wear bike pants or leggings underneath them.

Please department stores, have girls shorts closer to the knee & not crotch!

    • Yes, the range for tweens aand teens is kind of limiting too if you don’t want to expose their buttocks and bellies, which personally I’m not a fan of for any age groups. Clothing that is too revealing can be perceived as provocative in my opinion. dressing provocatively often with reason to receive a reaction from others. Of course an important question why one would do so and who’s reaction they are after

  • I tend to agree with these mums, these shorts are not appropriate for a toddler. Good on this mum for speaking out and Kmart really should take accountability for this as it is a bit ridiculous that they would consider selling shorts like this for this age group. I hope Kmart recalls this product and puts out an apology! They definitely weren’t thinking when they decided to sell this product.

  • This is really poor form for Kmart, and I have found most if not all children’s clothing retailers have the same issue. Boys clothing might be a line of boring, repetitive colours and patterns but they cover them up properly. Shorts that teeny tiny are useless for toddlers and small kids. I’d be buying from the boys section just like the comment said.
