We recently asked our community for their best hacks on saving money when shopping at Woolworths, because we’re all feeling the cost of living pinch.

And we loved all of the ideas that came flooding in – all 1,110 of them! We’ve compiled some of our favourite ideas below, so you can start saving on your grocery shopping too.

Mums Reveal Their Hacks For Saving On Shopping At Woolies

From the best days to shop a bargain, to the craftiest way to stretch your dollar further, here are the Mouths of Mums’ community’s top tips for saving when shopping at Woolworths.

Shop Online

We’re all guilty of throwing in a few extra items when shopping in store. Supermarkets are designed to capitalise on the impulse purchase! So our mums recommend letting your fingers do the shopping, to make it easier to stick to a budget.

“I shop online, I am not privy to the temptations of shopping in-store and it keeps my grocery bill down at least $50 to $100 a week!”

“I love using the Woolworths ‘Best Value’ App on my phone, it helps me pick the best value for money products.”

“Use the filter option to list items from low to high price or lowest unit price.”

Plan And Be Prepared!

It’s an oldie but a goodie – make sure you know exactly what you need, and stick to your list. And meal planning is a must!

“I always create a meal plan and plan out our family meals each week, then do a big grocery shop once a week. This has saved me lots of money by not going to Woolies everyday and buying extra stuff we don’t really need.”

“I plan meals around weekly specials which makes it exciting each week as to what will be on the menu and buy in bulk for non-perishables! I also stick to a shopping list and avoid impulse buys to keep our budget on track.”

“We bulk buy everything and meal prep weekly. We only stock on the sale items especially the half price items and work our meals for the week around those! There’s always a bonus when there’s extra reward points for certain products!”

Shop The Specials

Scour the catalogues and app for the best deals of the week, and then plan your meals around what’s on special. It’s such a simple tip, but it will save you plenty.

“I’m the matriarch of huge family, budgeting is in my DNA. Tuesdays check Woolworths online for Wednesday specials. Purchase non-perishables in multiples when half price. Purchase fresh whole chickens, good price, great roast dinner. Leftover chicken portioned into freezer bags later used for chicken pies, chicken quiche, chicken curry.”

Activate Deals

If you’re not already an Everyday Rewards Member, what are you waiting for? It’s a brilliant way to get money off your shop, by activating weekly promos.

“Apply for everything Woolworths offers! Activate all boosts. Use their app. Use their reward card. Pounce on special offers!”

Become A Woolworths Everyday Extra Member

So many of our mums recommend becoming a Woolworths Everyday Extra member to save money on shopping. With extra points, extra perks and a 30 day free trial it’s a no-brainer. Others also recommend Everyday Mobile from Woolworths, which is a prepaid mobile phone service.

“I subscribe to every single promotion Woolies offers me. Getting 10% off my biggest shop every month with Woolworths Extra, and boosting every single Rewards offer and email that comes my way helps boost my points tally.”

“Both my husband and I are Woolworths mobile customers which means we both both get a 10% off per shop per month. We time our usage of our 10%, one at the beginning of the month and one at the end, so that we maximise the discount which saves us on average at least $50/month.”

“Take advantage of Woolworths Extra when it’s half price! We get double points on spends at Woolies, we shop the home brands where possible. Take a list!! Otherwise Woolies tells you what you need.”

  • This is using that old fashioned thing called common sense. If you have a list and are prepared, then you will save money.

  • I will never move to shopping online. You miss out on too much. I love going in and finding markdowns – can’t do that online. I rarely pay full price for meat. If you suss out the right times you can go right when they mark things down. I always shop the specials and have a list prepared. I wouldn’t get by without a list.

  • Plan, be prepared, have a list and stick to it. Shipping online is ideal to curb those impulse buys whilst walking round the store. Although the replacement options Woolies supply at times are confusing and sometimes costly

  • Some great advice. Every little bit helps.

  • I’m a Coles shoppers generally but most of these tips still work at Coles anyway except obviously Coles has flybuys instead of Woolworths rewards. I think the biggest tip is to avoid wastage. For example use leftovers the next day or make sure you have a recipe that uses up any unused vege etc at the end of the week.

  • These are such great ideas given the cost of living is getting worse these days

  • All my big shops are online these days and it’s easy to adjust my cart as I see the price I creasing. My only problems is the available options of certain products – depending on which store the order is coming from. The store that does the deliveries seems to have less options on certain products compared to my local stores (but they are only click and collect or in-house shopping), so sometimes I have no choice but to spend more unless I go in store

  • I trick to saving money is to NOT shop at Woolworths or Coles if you can. They’ve made huge profits off the backs of struggling Aussies and it’s so, so wrong! They keep saying they’re keeping the price of staples down and that’s one big lie. Why give your hard earned money to the duopoly that are fleecing everyone left, right and centre!! It’s disgusting and has to be stopped!! So that’s my tip on saving money.

  • Looking to deals is always important. I find it most important to make a shopping list and stick to it.

    • It is so important to adhere to a list and not be tempted by other items not on the list.

  • Adhering to the food budget and meal planning is essential. Buying specials and in bulk is always our go to tip for saving money.

  • As people have said, I’m a big fan of meal planning. But also, if you know you have an event coming up in a few months, keep an eye on the specials as you might be able to stash things like lollies in advance.

    • I try and do this as well for kids birthdays and picnics etc over the summer months

  • Boosting has helped me rack up $210 for Chrissy so far, very stoked on that.
Be smart with your meal plan. Use up all your veggies across different meals. Cook extra and have leftovers for lunch to save on food out.
I personally hate ordering click and collect or delivery. I’ve found the effort to give me good fruit and veg just isn’t there. And packing the bags in such wasteful ways. It might be a paper bag, but its still unnecessary to have 3 items per bag.
