Mums share their secret ingredients to make the perfect pumpkin soup. Yummy!

I love pumpkin soup on a cold day. Nothing warms up your soul better than a big bowl of pumpkin soup.

I like to add a bit of curry powder and a sprinkle of garam masala to add that little bit of spice and extra warmth.

Some of these clever little secret additions are actually quite genius though!

Secret ingredients from mums

Some mums add leek and onion. Others add garlic and ginger.

Some say cooking the pumpkin in milk is the secret while others add coconut milk or cream to the mixture.

Potato, carrot and celery are popular additions as well as sweet potato too.

Roasting the pumpkin is a popular technique to enhance the flavours.

Adding BACON! for extra flavour also seems to be a winner.

Nutmeg and cumin are both fave spices to add for lots of our mums too.

Meanwhile orange was something we had never heard of before. That’s a bit different.

So what is your secret ingredient in pumpkin soup? Do you have a fail safe recipe that everyone loves?

  • Roasting always gives it such amazing flavour. If you have time, roasting a while bulb of garlic to zip through is incredible. And of course bacon makes everything taste better hehe

  • I roast my pumpkins a whole onion and a whole bulb of garlic. Once roasted I take skins off garlic n onion and blitz all together then in a pot I fry off some Thai curry paste and add coconut milk and pumpkin mix along with a little stock.

  • My hubby makes all our soup because he enjoys cooking. Even though he doesn’t like pumpkin soup himself he still makes it for me and it is totally awesome. I know he uses butternut pumpkin and adds potato, carrot and celery and a selection of spices. It is thick and hearty.

  • Shock, horror. I’ve never made pumpkin soup and I probably won’t now since I’d be the only one to eat it. My son doesn’t like soup and it’s only my son and I now.

  • Loved adding fresh oysters just before digging in, around a backyard fire with friends and occasionally creamed corn, which my sister’ used to do.
I generally add bacon bones, onion, potato, sweet potato, parsnip & turnip along with garlic, ginger and cinnamon. A dob of sour cream topped with fresh chives when dishing up adds a nice touch.
