Mums share their secret ingredients to make the perfect pumpkin soup. Yummy!

I love pumpkin soup on a cold day. Nothing warms up your soul better than a big bowl of pumpkin soup.

I like to add a bit of curry powder and a sprinkle of garam masala to add that little bit of spice and extra warmth.

Some of these clever little secret additions are actually quite genius though!

Secret ingredients from mums

Some mums add leek and onion. Others add garlic and ginger.

Some say cooking the pumpkin in milk is the secret while others add coconut milk or cream to the mixture.

Potato, carrot and celery are popular additions as well as sweet potato too.

Roasting the pumpkin is a popular technique to enhance the flavours.

Adding BACON! for extra flavour also seems to be a winner.

Nutmeg and cumin are both fave spices to add for lots of our mums too.

Meanwhile orange was something we had never heard of before. That’s a bit different.

So what is your secret ingredient in pumpkin soup? Do you have a fail safe recipe that everyone loves?

  • I add a small onion, cook in veg stock and season with a little garlic and a little bit of curry powder, not so much as is tastes like curry, just enough to add a bit of warmth (for me about a scant teaspoon is enough).

  • I like to use coconut milk and potato to make it thicker and also add curry powder.

  • I’ve added leek and onion, cumin and coriander and a potato, carrot and sweet potato. We serve with a dollop of sour cream and sliced shallots. I also make it a full meal adding spinach/cheese tortellini once cooked.

  • Not really a secret ingredient, but I do prefer pumpkin soup when it has potato in it. It thickens the soup to a nice consistency.
