An Australian mum’s clever fruit hack is going viral, after she revealed the simple trick keeps berries super fresh for two weeks.

With the ever-increasing price of food, we’re all looking for ways to make our groceries last longer. And there’s nothing worse than paying top dollar for fresh berries, only to have them go bad in a couple of days.

Andie Barber says her nanna taught her a simple hack to stop berries going bad too quickly. She tested it out over the past couple of weeks – and it worked!

“So, I’m sure I can’t be the only one who didn’t know this,” Andie said in her TikTok video. “But my nanna was recently staying at our house, and my daughter loves berries, loves berries. And we buy them from Woolies just in these, like, containers, but they always go off after a couple of days. So my nanna said, ‘Why don’t you just store them in glass jars?’

“So I tried it. I tested it. I had some strawberries in this glass jar. Look at this strawberry – it’s perfect! It’s been in the fridge for probably, nearly two weeks.”

“Lids on, any glass jar. Sometimes I wash them sometimes I don’t depends if I have time. That’s it. Just keep them in the fridge. And I have done it with strawberries, blackberries and blueberries.”

Storing Fruit In Glass Jars

Turns out, nanna is onto something, and the concept of storing fruit in glass jars to help it last longer has been around for some time.

Last year a Facebook post on the jar tip went viral, and was shared almost 400,000 times.

The tip was originally shared by Amy Cross on her Instagram account The Cross Legacy, who recommends soaking the berries in water and vinegar for a couple of minutes then allowing to dry before storing them in a glass jar. She claims you’ll have fresh strawberries for ‘weeks’ using this method.

  • What a brilliant tip, I’ll definitely be giving the glass jars a go. My fruit is always stored in the fridge but left in whatever packaging it comes in and never lasts long enough!

  • I have seen this hack before but Ive never tried it because berries never last in my fridge anyway (as in they get eaten as soon as they go in there)… My kids LOVE fruit- especially berries (of any kind) and grapes..
