A mum has issued a warning to other parents, after her toddler drank a common baby product, and ended up in emergency.

JennaJoy Ingraham said her family learned a ‘scary’ lesson, and wants others to know what they didn’t – that something most parents have in their house could be so dangerous.

“Our 18 month old-Graysen, grabbed a bottle of baby oil off the counter and drank a little bit around 10 yesterday morning while we were getting ready for church,” JennaJoy explained in a viral Facebook post.

She said her husband Casey got to their son quickly, and took the bottle of baby oil away.

“Gray made funny “yucky” faces because of how it tasted and we thought that was the worst that happened.

“A couple minutes later, he started acting lethargic. Falling asleep sitting up and not answering anyone. Basically awake but non responsive with the slowest blinks I’ve ever seen.

“When we picked him up, it was just dead weight and he kept trying to fall asleep in our arms.”

“We called the on call nurse only because of how he was acting. Had he not acted any differently, we wouldn’t have thought anything of him drinking a little baby oil.”

The nurse told JennaJoy to call the poison line, and that’s when the mum started to panic.

“Poison Control asked some questions about his behaviour along with his coughing and told us to take him to the ER now in case he aspirated any of it and it got in his lungs. They mentioned most parents don’t realise how dangerous baby oil can be if inhaled.”

The worried parents were told to head to the hospital immediately, with the emergency department being notified that they were on their way.

“Cue my intense panic,” JennaJoy said. ‘

Her husband took Graysen to the hospital while she stayed with their other son. They were told he would have to stay for a few hours to see if any symptoms would start.

“They did X-rays on his little lungs and told Case it’s the equivalent to you or I drinking gasoline.
What?! How did I not know that?! How has no one I have told so far known anything about how dangerous baby oil can be?!

“Of course we should not have had it on the counter where he could crawl up and grab it. Absolutely my careless mistake. And a big one.”

“After researching, I have learned it is a hydrocarbon and falls in the same categories as lighter fluid and motor oil.

Coughing, choking, and fever are common signs of hydrocarbon aspiration. Lung irritation and pneumonia, even death, can result. Symptoms can happen quickly – within a couple of hours or even sooner. If there are no symptoms in 24 hours, the child should remain fine.

After four hours the toddler was discharged from hospital, with the parents told to watch his breathing closely. Thankfully Graysen didn’t show any symptoms of hydrocarbon aspiration.

But they said the incident should serve as a warning to other parents.

“We are just shocked this isn’t something many parents know about and feel like more people should know about how dangerous an old nursery staple could be.

“I also really feel the need to spread the word of how dangerous that little bottle all new mums get at their baby shower or have next to the bath or changing table actually can be.”

Mum's baby oil warning

JennaJoy initally shared her post several years ago, but it’s still shared often, to ensure new parents are getting the message about just how dangerous baby oil can be.

Did you know baby oil could be so dangerous?

  • I never knew this about baby oil. It’s scary what we put on our little ones only to find out years later just how dangerous they can be. I’m just glad that he was okay and that they were willing to share with others so it didn’t happen to any other child.

  • So tragic and also a great timely manner for every adult and parent around!

  • These articles and warnings are very timely with the school holidays on the way and such a good reminder to keep particular products well away and out of the reach of children. There are many products that are potentially harmful for children and they need to be well away from children.

  • This is a good warning to be on the lookout for any products that toddlers can get their hands on.

  • I dont think it matters if a product is a common baby product or not. If it is not intended to be injested then it has to be treated as serious when anyone drinks these things. Its hard to watch children 100% of the time so its important to do your best to keep things out of their reach

    • Yes I agree, there are many poducts in our homes that are simply not for ingesting (baby product or not). And indeed we can’t watch our kids 100% all the time but they do need a high level of supervision. Children are more impulsive than older people because their brains are still developing, and they are still learning how to control their impulses.

      • It really is such a good point about impulse control and children do have to learn to control their impulses and it can indeed take a lot of time to attain. Children are naturally inquisitive about anything and everything around them and really do like to explore the world around them.

      • Yes indeed and beside impulse controle they aren’t able to think in terms of cause and effect and so they can’t plan ahead, their memory is not well developed and ability to focus for other than a short time is not there. I always find it helpful to look through the eyes of a child

  • Absolutely scary! Ive never known this myself nor have i used the product before.

  • Oh wow!! A product I never used because I just didn’t see the need, and now I’m glad I didn’t have it in my house. But I never would have thought it would be so harmful like that! That’s scary

  • That’s horrible! I would have had no idea that something like that could be so harmful. Anything that is designed to be used on babies skin should be all natural and shouldn’t cause any harmful effects. I used to use olive oil on my babies for massage, which would not have been harmful. Manufacturers really need to be more careful with what they put in products!

  • That is one scary thing to happen to a young child. So glad they responded so quickly and got him seen to straight away. Unfortunately things happen too quickly with little ones around and it’s great that you have shared this story for other parents and carers to read. A reminder to keep all products out of reach.

  • I’d just assume that any kinds of powder, oils, soaps, moisturisers etc are dangerous if consumed so I’ve always kept them out of little hands reach anyway. I hope this mum isn’t copping too much negativity, we all make mistakes and she’s voiced that. Glad the little kid is on the mend.

  • Oh my goodness how scary !! Thank God they acted immediately and Graysen didn’t show any symptoms of hydrocarbon aspiration and could be discharged so soon !
Those little hands can be so quick ! Once when I came home from the shop and was unpacking my bags I put the gel spray for a moment on the counter. My youngest quickly grabbed a bottle of gel spray and started drinking it…she started coughing and became unwell. I immediately phoned the healthline and poisonline too: glad these services are available !

  • It so good that these stories are getting out there as a warning. It is way too easy for little ones to get their hands on things in the blink of an eye. Good to hear it all turned out well in the end.

  • Any bottle of creams or lotions that get applied to the body is toxic. Its good stories like these get mentioned but its just a reminder to parents, nothing new. Its common sense to not leave things in reach of young children. They are quick and don’t know any better. Its not just things like baby oil, its the same for many household products, even button batteries are another one to not leave lying around.

  • Kids can be so quick! So glad your little boy is ok. I turned my back on me for 5 seconds to get his bottle and he’d crawls to the laundry and was licking the cat food. I always put him in the play pen now because I cannot trust him lol

  • Thanks for sharing this article. I would have been very nervous and scared if I was in this situation thankfully most bottles these days have safety caps on them which kids can’t open. It is a timely reminder to be extra careful with any product around kids as they just don’t understand these things shouldn’t be taken.

  • That’s scary! Always have to keep thus stuff away from kids

  • What a fright! And yes it should be shared more widely. I did not know this.

  • Wow, I’m so grateful to find out this information. I had absolutely no idea baby oil had such a high risk if a child were to consume it. I’ll definitely be making sure any bottle is put away and out of reach from little hands. Wonderful to read that her child was okay and now we can all learn from their families experience.
