A traumatised mum is calling for all shopping trolleys with child restraints to be fitted with brakes, after her 17-month-old suffered a large brain bleed in a freak accident.

Casey Gobbert, from Queesland, had finished her shopping and left her daughter Millie in the trolley, while she put her three-year-old son into the car. She says she turned her back for ‘two seconds’, and the trolley was caught by a gust of wind and toppled off the kerb and tipped.

Millie’s head struck the bitumen.

“We took her straight to Logan Emergency,” Casey explained in a Facebook post.

“They monitored her, for a few hours, decided she needed a CT scan which found a large brain bleed causing pressure on her brain. She was prepped immediately. Sedated, intubated and rushed lights and sirens to the Brisbane Children’s Hospital where she was rushed straight into emergency brain surgery.”

Little Millie was in surgery for two hours, before being transferred to paediatric ICU, before being moved to the high acuity ward.

“She’s doing amazing. Had a follow up CT which showed her brain is looking great. They lowered the sedation, and took the breathing tube out. She’s flying through her tests and She’s getting stronger. She’s now trying to sit up, smiling and eating. Her cheeky self is coming through now and I can’t be happier and proud of her progress.”

Millie was released from hospital yesterday, almost a week after her accident. And Casey has now made it her mission to warn other parents just how dangerous trolleys can be. She’s also campaigning for trolleys to be fitted with a braking system.

“Prams by law have to have a brake and an arm strap. Why should a trolley be any different? If I can stop just one family from the traumatic events we have gone through in the last 48 hours then it will be worth it. No family deserves to be told their 17-month-old baby girl needs brain surgery from a simple trip.”

Some shopping trolleys in Australia do have brakes, including those with baby capsules and double seats.

  • Trolleys are the worst! A lot of the time the wheels are bad and you can’t even steer them straight.
I think they need to be much more cautious with them and they should all be checked regularly to ensure they are not hazardous.

  • The poor little mite. I hope she heals well and her Mum doesn’t feel guilty.

  • I think brakes are a great idea as trolleys often take off when you are putting things into the car, including people with disabilities etc. I am often chasing them around the car park, and I am surprised there are not more accidents with them.

  • This story made me cry, you can’t help but imagine yourself and your child in that situation. How scary and traumatic. How brave, strong, and beautiful the little girl is, I’m so relieved she is doing well and recovering, Best wishes to you little one.

I absolutely agree with the Mom’s mission to make shopping carts safer and I hope this happens. This will definitely make me extremely more cautious before putting my 13 month old daughter into any other device other than her stroller and car seat.

  • It is very easy you have a handle like a brake on a push bike when its open brake is on only when you pull handle in brake is released they put these type of braking on American lawn mowers. Let go and everything stops.
As for baby I hope everything is ok and wish the best for the future

  • Aw the poor darling. Yes, all trolleys should have brakes just like prams. Obviously people need to use them but at least it can prevent more accidents like this from happening.

  • I can’t imagine how distraught this Mother would’ve been. It would be good if they could provide brakes on some child friendly trolleys and mark them so mums know which ones are safer to use!

  • I’m sorry this has happened to your child, and you are making people aware of your incident, but you chose to leave your child unattended in a trolley that says not to leave your child unattended.
