At just 15-years-old, Brooke was breastfeeding her baby boy, when she realised he was choking on something. She could never have imagined that it was her nipple.
The now 32-year-old mum-of-six relived the horrifying moment in a TikTok video, as part of a series about things she wished someone had told her about breastfeeding.
The mum said she’d seen a lactation consultant and her son had a good latch and was gaining weight. But things quickly took a turn.
“Until I notice, his latch is not so good. My nipple started to turn black at the base and white at the tip. That’s a signal for bad blood flow. There’s no blood flow getting to the nipples. That’s a dead nipple and dead tissue.
“I latched my baby boy on. He’s nursing and … he stops. I’m looking down … he’s kind of choking. My nipple broke off and he had it in his mouth.”
What Brooke didn’t know was that she had nipple vasospasm – which is a sudden narrowing or constriction of the blood vessels. This usually causes nipple and breast pain, and is usually triggered when the baby isn’t latching properly. The lack of blood flow can temporarily turn the nipple white. She also had nipple necrosis, which is dead tissue.
“I started to panic, I started to freak out. I don’t know what the hell is going on. Luckily I was with my mum and my sister and they’re like, ‘Hurry, let’s get the nipple and put it back on’. I rinsed the nipple off in water and I put it back on. I called the advice nurse.
“They told me if the nipple is still alive and has enough blood flow in it, then it can actually reattach itself and to keep the bandaid on. That’s what I did, my nipple’s not perfect today but it’s still here. That was the last day I ever breastfed that child.”

Incredibly, Brooke eventually went on to breastfeed three more of her children, and says her rare case shouldn’t put any other mums off breastfeeding.
“Please do not let my experience be your determining factor to not have kids or to not breastfeed. This happened to me and I have still successfully breastfed three babies.”
