A mum-of-two is being honoured for her selfless act of heroism at a horror crash in regional Victoria, which claimed her life.

Eleanor Bryant, 43, reportedly died while pushing students out of the way of an oncoming tanker, which had crashed through the Riddells Creek Macedon Ranges Montessori Pre-School yesterday afternoon.

The speech pathologist was a mum to an 11-year-old son and nine-year-old daughter, and is being remembered for always putting others first.

Today presenter Alex Cullen honoured his friend Eleanor, in an emotional tribute.

“There are people in this world who you can’t quite believe are so kind, so generous, so wonderful and caring. Eleanor Bryant, or EJ, as she was to us, was one of those people,” Alex said.

“Eleanor was a light that lit up every room. Never had a bad word to say about anyone. An accomplished speech pathologist, she was the eldest of four kids who grew up on a farm just outside my hometown of Coonamble, a community in Northwest New South Wales where everyone knows everyone, and they all look after each other.

“That community I know will be hurting today. To Tim, her husband, one of the nicest blokes you’d ever meet, we’re thinking of you, mate and your wonderful kids, 11 year old son, a mad Sydney Swans fan, and their beautiful nine year old daughter.

“It does not surprise me one bit that Eleanor pushed those school kids out of the way yesterday to ultimately save their lives. She always, always put others first. A great example to all of us. We will miss you, Eleanor, and thank you everything you gave us.”

A three-year-old-boy was taken to hospital with serious arm injuries after the crash, but no other children were injured, which police say was ‘unbelievable’.

Detective Senior Sergeant Christian Von Tuk revealed that there were a number of children and staff in the playground area at the time of the incident, which ‘could have been a lot worse’.

“This is one of those close calls that I don’t know how only one person has died today. It’s unbelievable,” he said.

There are suggestions that the 68-year-old driver of the water tanker may have had a medical episode.

It comes less than two weeks after 11-year-old Jack Davey was killed after a car crash through a school fence in Melbourne’s inner east.

  • This is such a sad story. Her poor husband and kids. What a devastating loss. Sounds like the world lost an incredible lady and God gained an angel. Thinking of all those who knew her and hoping that the fact she died a hero brings at least some small comfort to them all..

  • By the sound of it she was a wonderful person that was loved by many. She will be so missed and leave a huge gap, especially in the lifes of her husband and her children, her friends, her colleague’s, her students. My heart goes out to all involved. Thinking about the driver too

  • It is so important that true and selfless heroes get honoured for acts of pure courage. This was indeed and incredible act. Every sympathy for her family and the heartbreak they will endure and have to navigate. I hope they receive support from family and friends and the wider community.

  • How dreadful for her family, but how wonderful for all the children who survived. This was horrifying.

  • Such a tragedy that should never have happened. Why aren’t there roads set aside for trucks and tankers to use so they don’t go near a school. My condolences to the husband and children who lost their wife and mother. Kids will be too scared to eat or play in the playgrounds if things go on as they are. Eleanor was a saint. RIP

  • I heard about this story on the news. It’s absolutely heart breaking. Her children are almost the same age as my two. I would hope that I could do the same if it came down to it, but reacting like that in the heat of the moment instead of running herself? She’s incredibly brave.

  • So tragic for her own precious children to have lost their beautiful mum. She’ll always be remembered as the shero who saves many children’s lives that day. Yet will leave such a lasting hole with her absence. May the little boy in hospital make a quick & full recovery & bear no long term trauma from the accident.

  • This is horrifying and indeed not long after the incident whereby a boy was killed after a car crash through a school fence in Melbourne’s inner east. This is seriously concerning ! Drivers in these type of area’s should be extremely cautious. My heart goes out to the families and loved ones involved

  • This is happening way too often these days. I know it was an accident but how senseless to take a life. It may have been a medical problem but I hope that this is not a regular occurrence. I really feel for the adult that was killed and their family. I’m glad not more people or babies were hurt.

  • Oh goodness, this is so terribly sad. That poor adult, likely staff at the centre. I hope the child makes a quick recovery and none of these children are traumatised. What a sad, senseless scenario.

  • This is incredible sad, I feel for the families of those involved. I hope the child is ok, it was good to read it was not life threatening injuries. it is so scary to think that you just don’t know what could happen at any moment. You really do need to live life and make every moment count.
