Cadbury has announced it will lower the price of its family block, but there’s one catch…

The milk block as we know it will also be smaller.

The news has caused an outrage online, with fans slamming the brand for “ripping off” customers.

The Cadbury Dairy Milk Blocks will reduce in size from 200g to 180g.

The announcement on the company’s Facebook page on Thursday sent Aussies into a meltdown.

“Haven’t you already reduced the block before” one customer asked.

Another added: “Family block will now be the size of a Snack bar! Consumers being ripped off again!!”

“Seriously? How many millions do you make in a year that you need to ‘reduce’ costs,” a third argued.

“Don’t call it a family block anymore. Tasting block for couples.”

Cadbury statement

“It’s been four years since we last reviewed the size of our Cadbury blocks but due to increasing costs, it just isn’t sustainable for us to absorb these costs any longer. Instead of raising the price of our Cadbury Dairy Milk blocks, we decided to reduce the size slightly,” the company wrote in an online statement.

“Rather than raising the recommended retail price, we’ve made the call to reduce the size of our Cadbury family blocks, and also bring down the recommended retail price slightly, so that our blocks can continue to be an affordable treat for all Australians.

“We know some will be disappointed by this change, but we want to keep offering you the best value and best tasting chocolate we can.”

  • Affordable? When have they been affordable in the past say 10 yrs? $7 for a “family” block is way to expensive, and now they r making it smaller AGAIN! What r they gonna do, reduce it by 50c? I only ever buy it when on special.

  • Kind of defeats the purpose, reduce the size and the cost. Why not leave it as a status quo, surely it would make no difference, unless of course the price reduction is only going to be minimal, which means they are still going to be making a substantial profit per block. Personally I think they have mucked around too much with flavours, what was wrong with the standards that I grew up with, no more peppermint cream, it’s peppermint aero and it’s just not the same, but no doubt it’s cheaper to make. I try not to buy Cadbury now, not since they decided to pay for halal approval certification, I mean since when was chocolate animal based ???? Well that was my rant for the night

  • These big companies like to make any excuse, they are after more profits. Cadbury does not source their ingredients from sustainable sources, fill it up with milk and sugar and call it chocolate, true chocolate has a higher percentage of cocoa. Buy other brands that are fair trade, organic and sustainable, and often tastier and not more expensive at all. Or just give up chocolate like I did and I don’t miss it at all.

  • I myself haven’t eaten the chocolate since the first taste of the new recipe crated to save the company money.

I remember fondly going to the Cadbury Factor in Tassie in my late teens. Looked forward to it again when my daughter relocated to Hobart over 8 years ago. Then found out that it was no longer possible because of OH&S fears and possible legal damages. Yet another cost cutting exercise.

  • They are REDUCING the price in accordance with the smaller size.
They are NOT reducing the size and increasing the price at the same time like some manufacturers do.
They deserve some credit for their honesty

  • I guess time will tell how true the Cadbury supporters are – if you don’t like what they are doing try not to buy their products (I know easier said than done it’s chocolate but they will soon see their customers are not happy and choosing to go elsewhere for their chocolate fix).

  • I don’t know why everyone is so upset, cost of living has gone up so changes need to be made

  • I think it is a good idea. We all eat too much ….. and chocolate is part of it! The price will be scaled to match the reduced size.. so (unless we go and buy 2 bars instead of 1) it might be doing us a favour! I think the milk chocolate ought to come under scrutiny from ‘sugar tax’ but that is another issue! Only the darkest plain has cocoa as the main ingredient… the other bars are all more sugar than anything else.

  • At least they’re upfront about it. I don’t see this as a trick.

  • No one wants smaller blocks!!

  • at least they are telling us and not trying to hide it, they said the price will reflect the reduction in size

  • sadly they are not the only ones playing these tricks

  • A little disappointing. If they reduce the amount, they should reduce the price accordingly.

  • This is just unfair. Understandably there are rising costs for every one not just Cadbury. If they reduce their bar size and expect consumers to pay the full price they’re going to have a reduction in consumers plain & simple. Shame Cadbury.
