A gender rights law has made it through Tasmania’s lower house meaning parents will soon need to ‘opt in’ to have a baby’s sex recorded on birth certificates.

The House of Assembly passed the legislation, which was proposed by Labor and the Greens, on Tuesday night thanks to a deciding vote by Liberal speaker Sue Hickey, shares Daily Mail.

Other changes include individuals being allowed to change their gender from the age of 16 by simply filling out a statutory declaration, according to The Australian.

Anti-discrimination laws were also widened to include ‘gender expression’ such as using the correct names and titles of transgender people.

Amendments were also added to a bill removing the need for a person to become divorced before changing gender.

The laws still have to pass upper house, but it is the first time these laws have been voted through lower house in Australia.

  • I disagree with this – how are stats collected, census, births deaths and marriages data etc? how many non gender babies were born? If there is confusion surely the Dr can clarify or then go with another option rather than male/female. My eyes are green but some might say hazel, I am thinking this shouldn’t be on my passport then?
We have adapted so many customs for minority groups. It’s gone too far now, bring back the common sense

  • The world keeps changing and I guess for the most part we have to change with it.

  • That’s probably better than having ‘neutral’ on the gender.

  • How ridiculous! Yet again changing things to make life easier for a tiny minority. What’s wrong with listing the gender a baby is born with and them changing it down tge track if it ever becomes a necessity. My god today’s politicians really focus on the most pathetic topics to argue and change . I’m sure it’s just to be trail blazers, so they can say I was the first to do this

  • How about we give them the gender they are born with and let them change it IF/when they choose to? My kids aren’t gender neutral but the toys they play with certainly aren’t chosen based on gender. And if one or both of them assign themselves a different gender I won’t mind one bit. But parents need to take a step back and work out if it’ll confuse or upset their children instead of just going ahead with it!

  • Ridiculous. Next we will have to opt int to whether we are human or not too.

  • We need to be careful these laws don’t have the opposite effect of what is intended.
