Hello!

I never quite know how it happens but every now and then, I (and as a consequence my entire family) fall off the fruit and veggies wagon.

I’m suddenly as far from the ‘perfect mum’ as I can get! I get busy, I forget to have fruit cut up in the fridge, I get busy, I don’t have time to cook a proper dinner’, I get busy, we just order takeaway, I get busy, I put hubby in charge and we have 2 minute noodles!

Piling Up

Suddenly two weeks have passed and I wonder why I have fruit and veggies piling up in the fridge, on the bench and in the cupboard. And, I’m sure I’m overexaggerating, but the kids start to err on a whiter shade of pale and their behaviour leaves more to be desired than usual.

The effect on me I’m sure is far more profound; my emotions, my logic and my mothering instinct all come under fire and I descend into a pit of self-loathing (well perhaps not quite that dramatic) but I do start to beat myself up. Not only for the fact that I’m not giving my children the nutrition they deserve – particularly when there are other children in the world who need it so badly; but also for the money that we end up wasting.

What A Waste!

When I think about all the fruit and veggies I end up tossing out because they’ve become a slimy mess in the bottom of the crisper and then combine this with the cost of the takeaway etc we’re buying, Mother Guilt really gets her fangs out!

Yes, it’s not a pretty picture at all!

No More Excuses!

So, this morning I scrubbed the crispers, relined them all with paper towel, sorted every last carrot into the ‘chuck, soup or fresh’ piles, have chopped up pineapples and diced rockmelons so there’s no excuse.

Later today, I’ll arc up the slow cooker and make a beef hotpot (and hide that giant eggplant), I’ll make a giant apple & pear crumble, I’ll put out carrot sticks and homous for afternoon snacks and we’ll all be back on the fruit and veggies wagon!

Oh, we’ve got a great fruit and veggies bread recipe for you to try – it’s the perfect way to hide and use up the fruit and veggies hiding in the kitchen. Try it here.

And if you have any tips for including more fruit & veggies in your family’s diet, we’d love to hear from you.

  • It’s hard working and getting meals done but it’s so important. We very rarely eat take away. My idea of a quick meal when I have no time is fish, chips and salad so we are at least still getting the veggies and it isn’t as unhealthy as it could be. Most of the time I make time to cook something. Even if it’s a matter of preparing the slow cooker the night before and switching it on in the morning. I begrudge throwing anything out and must say that I do try to avoid it at all costs and rarely do throw out fresh fruit or veg.

  • I think we all find ourselves in this situation. I’m there now but with fruit. With the extremely hot weather I went mad on all things fruit (in the fridge) that I love to eat when it’s hot… only for it to drop to cool in Melbourne. So no-one wants to eat fruit. If its veg, I can cope. Everything can be thrown into a zucchini/vegie/surprise slice, but fruit… I don’t have as many options.

  • We only but as we need it, which means more trips to the supermarket but we make it then into our family walks to go to the supermarket and home

  • I tend not to stock pile too much in the fridge. But what I do find helpful is having a lot of veg pre-cut in the fridge. Then there is no excuse for not being able to whip up a quick stirfry.

  • We grow a lot of our food, so I plan my meals around what is ripe and ready in the garden. Never throw stuff out though but there’s a lot of made up meals in the fridge/freezer.

  • I buy as I need but this week it definitely piled up on us this week

  • I shop several times a week for fresh fruit. It’s annoying have to go to the shops so much but we waste a lot less.

  • I freeze a lot of it when it’s getting close to it’s expiry date, it rescues a lot

  • I plan my shopping needs as concisely as I can so I have no wastage – I’d rather make a separate trip to the shops for something I need rather than buy extra and throw it away.

  • I don’t throw anything out and make sure it doesn’t go to waste. It does mean that I usually don’t cook double serves, just enough for all of us.

  • I do a meal plan and only buy the amounts I need. I hate wasting food

  • I am using broccoli stack for stir fry…

  • Sometimes it happens to me too. Before going shopping, I always check the fridge, to see which content I have “forgotten”. To include more vegetables in my diet, I freeze a big bag of mixed spinach and kale. Then I make a smoothie mixing one cup of greens, one cup of diced frozen mango and two cups of water.

  • I rarely throw out fruit or veggies. I actually tend to use most of them as I limit myself to what I buy

  • Yeah, not so much here. I love my fruit and veg too much to let it go to waste and throw it out

  • I could have written this article myself. It happens sometimes, it’s ok as long as it’s just ‘sometimes’ and doesn’t become a habit

  • We toss them out all the time as there’s always one or two at the bottom that go soggy etc.
