If you’ve ever had to deal with a heavy period flow, you’ll know all too well the nagging fear of leaking through your clothing or onto the bed sheets. Fear not, this handy and simple period tip has been labelled a ‘game changer’ for heavy flow and postpartum bleeding.

The clever tip was shared by Alice Williams, the founder of Ovira (a device that gives instant period pain relief), who has been hailed as some sort of demigoddess for the idea.

The tip is to place a pad like you normally would in your undies, but then get another pad and place that horizontally where your bottom goes. I know right?! The video has been viewed almost 20 million times, with women understandably praising the concept.

“Horizontally is a game changer,” wrote one woman.

“I learn something new on TikTok every single time I come on here. Why didn’t I know this earlier?” wrote another.

“And I will finally be able to sleep on my back and not fear,” replied Eleanor.

“This would have been great for postpartum,” wrote Juliana Jones.

Some women did point out that overnight pads are designed to stop leakage from behind, others said they’re simply not wide enough.

What do you think of this tip? Is it a game changer for you? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Overnight pads were usually enough for me.

  • Not a bad idea! I haemorrhage when I have my period, but most of the time super, overnight or maternity pads do the trick…
My little hack to add for pads, is to put them in your child’s underwear when they are potty training. It helps to keep part of the mess contained

  • Never thought of doing that with a heavy flow and sometimes period undies aren’t enough if you flow is THAT heavy.

    • Yes, my daughter leaks through the period undies and uses overnight pads in the period briefs

  • What a brilliant idea! I’ve since switched to period undies because of leaking, but will remember this!

  • Genius. Wish I would have thought of doing this.

  • I have used modibodi period knickers for a few years now and they are fantastic. I have to use the heavy overnight ones but a lot better that having leaks all the time. My teenage daughter wears them all the time. She likes to feel safe even when she doesn’t have her periods.

  • This would have worked wonderfully for my aging [and dying] husband in his later days as he lost control of his bodily functions and would have been so much more manageable than the nappies he was put in when in the hospital.

  • My daughter uses both a period brief for heavy periods and pads for heavy periods. She now uses the period briefs always cause her discharge is heavy too…

  • Since having my tubes tied after my daughter was born 3 years ago my periods are very heavy every month. I had to switch from regular pads to overnights and the first few days are crazy! I will have to give this a try!

  • Why have I not tried this? This is so simple and I have doubled one for length but never thought to go horizontal.

  • Why would you waste pads and money when you can purchase overnight pads that are designed just like it and come in different flow levels.

  • Interesting. I guess it would work for some

  • If you are going through menopause and have heavy periods …this too maybe the answer.

  • Why even bother wasting two pads like that?!
I have a heavy period and use incontinence undies and I’ve never looked back.

  • I dont even recon that would save me during my heavy days.
