When Tara Bishop’s water broke at just 32 weeks pregnant with twins, she knew she had to get help. Her partner Hayden Davies called an ambulance, but their twins weren’t in the mood to wait.

With Tara in intense pain, an ambulance picked her up at the couple’s Sunnybank, Queensland home, but they didn’t make it far. Hayden was following behind, and couldn’t understand why the ambulance had stopped at the Tarragindi exit on the Pacific Motorway.

“I thought the ambulance stopped on the highway because Tara, who has a history of epilepsy, was having a seizure. But that wasn’t the case,” Hayden said. “I was following the ambulance in my car and noticed they had pulled over, so I ran to find out what happened.”

Baby Evelyn had already been born when Hayden got to the ambulance.

“When I got there the paramedic said Evelyn had arrived and we needed to get to the Mater straight away.”

But just six minutes later, little brother Harvey arrived – with both babies born breech.

Tara said she was couldn’t believe she’d just given birth on the side of the road. “It was a pretty dramatic arrival, obviously both of them couldn’t wait to meet us,” she said. “Evelyn arrived at 3.31am and Harvey at 3.37am. Everything happened so fast.”

Roadside birth

The couple say they’re forever grateful to the ambos who helped deliver their babies.

“Tara’s waters broke around 2.15am. I had planned to drive to her to the hospital however her pain had intensified, and I called for an ambulance – I am so glad I did,” Hayden said.

“We were actually preparing to deliver the twins via a caesarean section but that didn’t happen.”

Arriving two months early, Evelyn and Harvey have spent the past two weeks at Mater Mothers’ Hospitals’ Neonatal

Critical Care Unit (NCCU) at South Brisbane. The twins weighed  just 1770 grams and 1734 grams at birth.

And despite Harvey having some breathing problems early one, he’s now ‘happy and healthy’ and gaining weight.
