Mum reveals how a pie maker has become the favourite thing for her adult son Marshall, who has autism.

Sharing in the Kmart Pie Maker Recipes, Tips and Ideas Australia Facebook group, follower Caroline shared a photo of her very proud and happy son, Marshall, holding a plate of meat pies he had made himself.

She writes: ‘My son Marshall, who has Autism, does cooking with his support worker every Saturday. Today they made Aussie meat pies in the pie maker.’

Speaking to New Idea Food, Caroline says cooking is one of 20-year-old Marshall’s favourite hobbies.

Her post has attracted over 7400 likes and 615+ comments of praise and encouragement for Marshall and his cooking skills.

Other parents of children with Autism were also thrilled to see the positive response Caroline had received.

One mum wrote, ‘Seeing 5.1k likes and hundreds of comments on this post after four hours warms my heart. My son also has autism, and I worry constantly about the way the world will treat him. It’s clear to see that understanding and support is around in abundance.’

My 10 year old loves to cook! Guess what he bought himself with left over Easter Money?

A pie maker!! Of all things. Proud mum, glad he didn’t just get another pointless toy.

Do your kids love to cook? What’s something they have created all by themselves?

  • amazing. My autistic son doesn’t like to cook, but he has talents in other areas, he has good memory about trains, trams, buses, and trucks. and has a awesome imagination. I love that they all have their amazing talents. :-)

  • All people with Autism have talents. Often they are not encouraged to achieve like they would love to be. I have seen articles where people have cooked muffins in them too. Some have hidden talents that people don’t notice at all,

  • That’s great! Even though my son he still too young to cook something by himself, he loves to help me decorate biscuits and play in his play kitchen. Given I do a lot of cooking and baking I’m sure he will follow in my footsteps

  • My kids loved to cook and in Scouts and Guides they are guided that way with badges for the cooking skills. I can remember my 9yo son cooking a meal for the whole family [6 of us] so that he could get a cooking badge to sew on his shirt. He did a very good job too.
