With the cost of living crippling most family budgets, the answer to your problems could be hiding in your coin jar – a rare 50c coin potentially worth a whopping $15,000.

It’s understood that only two of the Aussie coins are known to be in circulation, but there could be more just waiting to be discovered.

Downies Coins & Collectables recently sold one of the pricey pieces for $14,750, saying it was only the second known example of its type.

Downies said the auction of the piece was a ‘mouth-watering opportunity’.

According to the retailer, the 1988 50c Coat of Arms Proof provided a ‘breathtaking opportunity’ for a coin collector.

According to a TikTok video posted by Downies, a commemorative 50c coin was issued in 1988, to mark the 200th anniversary of European arrival in Australia. That coin was meant to feature the First Fleet, and it was supposed to be the only 50c coin minted in 1988.

“There is very little information on how it happened but somehow a few were struck with the normal coat of arms. A rare phenomenon that results in what is known as a mule coin.”

The exact number of coat of arms coins minted in 1988 isn’t known, it’s one of the rarest Australian mules.

“An irresistible opportunity for the serious decimal enthusiast to take his or her collection to unparalleled heights, this excessively rare, eminently historic 1988 50c Mule is sure to be gone within days. Secure your 1988 50c Coat of Arms Proof today!”
