What is your funniest mum moment?

The funniest moment I have had as a mum was when I was in labour with my second child. Seems a strange time to consider my funniest mum moment, but looking back, I can’t help but laugh.

The day my daughter was born

The day started normally. I was more than 41 weeks pregnant and starting to lose hope of avoiding the induction that had been scheduled in 2 days.

I was happily playing with my 22 month old son at playgroup when I finally had my first contraction. I check my watch to see it is 11am. Playgroup finishes and everyone wishes me luck because they know I am booked in for an induction. I smile and happily say goodbye without telling anybody.

As the day goes on the contractions begin to get quite painful. I don’t want to call my husband yet because he is busy at work and I am sure we still have at least 12 hours before it is time to go to the hospital. My son happily plays and doesn’t seem too bothered by my moans.

5:30pm and the pain is bad. I have already filled the bath so I can get in once my husband gets home from work. He walks in the door and is shocked to see that I am in labour. I hand over parenting responsibilities and waddle off to the bath for some much needed pain relief.

6:45pm and my husband is on the phone to the midwife. He is trying to repeat their questions but I can’t answer because the contractions are frequent and intense. The midwife tells him to get me to the hospital or, if I feel any need to push, to call an ambulance.

I climbed out of the bath and started to make my way to the bedroom to get ready. Contractions are so intense by this point that I end up on my hands and knees while struggling to get some clothes on.

So there I am.

Half dressed, still damp, and on the floor moaning and screaming through a contraction.

And in he comes.

That sweet, innocent beautiful little person has come into my bedroom to see what is wrong with mummy.

Does he get upset by seeing his mother on the floor screaming in pain? Oh no, not my boy.

My boy walks in, climbs onto my back and yells “GIDDY UP, HORSEY!”

Giddy up, horsey.

I’m halfway through a contraction and my toddler is on my back thinking it is a fun game.

This kid. Too young, too innocent and too unsupervised by my distracted husband to ever be blamed for this.

It all works out

Lucky for us we got to the hospital in time and our baby girl was born at 8:08pm that night. When she is older, I look forward to telling her the story of my labour and how her big brother tried to have a horsey ride while I was in the middle of a contraction.

Hilarious to look back on

Sometimes you can look back on a moment and laugh. In that moment it was horrible and I was grateful my husband came in and saved me. I now look back and it cracks me up. It really was my funniest mum moment.

  • A good memory for you to have and reflect on down the track.

  • Lol so funny!! Every night (almost) my husband and I talk about the funny things our kids did that day!
We were at a friends engagement party a year or two ago and someone was praying for them, so everyone was serious and quiet, and then there’s my son (probably about 2) just stripping off swinging his shirt around!! So embarrassing but so funny.
