Halloween party treats aren’t known for being low in sugar, but there’s no reason they can’t be.

Making great tasting, nutritious treats together using peanut butter as the main ingredient also means that kids receive a slower release of energy from the treats, instead of the impending sugar-high that they can often experience from other lollies and chocolates.

So if you’re looking to create some spooky snacks with the kids this Halloween, this recipe from Susie Burrell for Mayver’s is super simple, tastes great and isn’t loaded with sugar!

Happy haunting!

Ingredients (serves 15 | makes 15 Peanut Butter Eyeballs)

  • 2 cups oats, blended
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup Mayver's Extra Crunchy Peanut Butter
  • 100g milk chocolate, for melting
  • 100g dark chocolate, for melting
  • 15 white chocolate buttons
  • 15 milk or dark chocolate drops

Method

  1. Combine oats, honey and peanut butter and roll into balls. Refrigerate until firm.
  2. Dip each ball into melted dark or white chocolate.
  3. Top with one white chocolate disc button and chocolate drop to complete eyeballs.

  • I love love love these. They are super awesome. I really like that they have used peanut butter, I bet it would taste so good. Dipping the eye ball in dark chocolate would be fun if you got the kids involved. It would be messy but lots of fun and then eating them not long afterwards.

  • Love the idea of using blended oats mixed in with the peanut butter! Very clever. I could totally indulge in a few of these. I loved Halloween growing up but my husband is very anti celebrating it. I agree with the amount of single use decorations that become waste, but trick or treating is so fun.

  • These look cute and not too unhealthy as far as treats go. However, I really don’t know what everyone’s big deal is about Halloween. You see it everywhere now and it is more of a European or American thing. I think the only reason it has come here is for shops to increase trade.

  • Oh these are very cool. You could even use the small edible google eyes from Coles instead of the choc chips..

  • They look cute ! I would take a nice raw chocolate or sugar free chocolate for melting, to keep it a bit healthier
