Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day. I love it. It is also the most important to kick start your metabolism, and sets you up for healthy eating for the rest of the day, while also giving you energy to get through the day (after your hot/warm lemon of course!).
Here are my top 5 favourite breakfast ideas to start me on the right track in the morning.
Breakfast ideas #1. Oats
The first of my breakfast ideas is oats, which can be served cold or hot. At the moment, with this great weather we have been having, cold is my recommendation! The cold version requires a bit of preparation, in terms of soaking the oats over night – which you can just do before you go to bed. If you forget, it’s no big deal! You can still eat them cold!
- 1/3 cup rolled oats
- Choice of milk – oat milk, rice milk, almond milk, coconut milk – about 1/3 of a cup, or enough to cover the oats.
- I also add some CADA into mine as well (CADA = Coconut, Almond, Date, Apple)
That’s it, then you have the choice of toppings to add just before you are going to eat your breakfast
- CADA (if you didn’t want to soak over night)
- Coconut
- LSA
- Chia
- Berries
- Passion fruit (my favourite at the moment)
On days when I am not home for breakfast, I usually prepare this the night before and put in a small container with everything I want in it – oats, coconut milk, CADA, chia and some frozen berries. Then in the morning I take it with me (don’t forget a spoon, though!).
2. Sourdough with Avocado and Hummus
Number two of my breakfast ideas is sourdough with avocado and hummus. Holey moley, this simple up-jumped toast is so yummy, and is one of the easiest breakfast ideas to make you feel a little bit fancy before you leave the house.
Spread your piece of sourdough bread with avocado, followed by hummus – SO simple, SO fast, and if you want to eat it on the go, just pack it in a lunch box or container! This is also great with a squeeze of lemon juice on top, or some fresh herbs like basil or parsley.
- 1 small peice of sourdough bread (or toasted)
- 1/4 avocado
- 1 big dollop of hummus
3. Eggs
There are SO many options with eggs:
- Omelette
- Boiled eggs (great for on-the-go!)
- Fried (in a non-stick pan)
- Scrambled
- Poached – another confession – I just go out for poached eggs!
Serve with spinach, mushrooms, small piece of sourdough toast, avocado – whatever you like!
4. Homemade Muesli
Below is a list of ingredients you can add to an air tight container. Add as much or as little as you like. Once you have added all your ingredients, shake well. The idea in making your own muesli is to make it wheat and dairy free, with as little sugar as possible. So don’t add too much dried fruit or products made of wheat. And serve with your choice of milk – oat, rice, almond, soy or coconut milk.
- Quick oats
- Rolled oats
- Desiccated coconut – just a small amount
- Pumpkin seeds
- Sunflower seeds
- Chia seeds
- Other nuts
- LSA – Linseed, Sunflower, Almond – crushed
- Rice bran cereal
- Puffed rice
- Rice flakes
- Quiona flakes
- Cinnamon
- Goji berries
5. Sourdough with Avocado & smoked Salmon
- 1 small piece of sourdough
- 1/4 avocado
- 1-1.5 small pieces of smoked salmon
Either have your sourdough toasted or fresh, add the avocado and then the salmon. This is another one you eat on the go!
Now for a BONUS recipe – only because I couldn’t decide on only five!
6. Quiona
Although this is one of my rather uncommon breakfast ideas, I implore you not to knock it ’til you try it! Great for on the run too!
I tend to cook a bigger batch of quiona and put in an air tight container and use it for salads or breakfast the next day.
- 1 cup of quiona
- 3 cups of water
Cook quiona on medium heat until water soaked up.
For my breakfast ideas I usually add some blueberries, chia seeds, LSA, a dash of oat or coconut milk and some seeds.
