  • Even better than the expensive brand..

At first we were always buying BRAND name items. But due to budget, we decided to start trying less expensive products! These were one of those less expensive products. The children love them for their every now and again snack, and the taste is very much the same as the expensive brand of the same kind of bar! I have recommended these to everyone we know with children..

  • Still Buying It!

Still buying it, my girls love to put in their lunch box for school. The flavours they enjoy, constantly asking for more, one a day is plenty though. My husband even like them for his "lunch box" for work, except he likes 2 in his, so we go through a lot. It's good that the price is reasonable and not as expensive as others.

Kids love them but high in sugar. I tried them and found them very sweet. ..

Kids as I said really love them. They are a sometimes snack. .. I did have my grand daughter over and she was a bit flat I gave her a bar and she perked up .. We took her to dr she was fine .. So if kids are a little flat these are perfect .. But I would not give them daily

  • Kids love 'em!

My kids really love Woolworths Select Vanilla Rice Bars when they spot them in the pantry.

For myself, I don't really like them. I find them overly sweet and very sticky. Sometimes I think they taste almost plasticky.

The pricing is more than reasonable. They are a lot cheaper than other brands out there.

So while I don't enjoy Woolworths Select Vanilla Rice Bars, my girls really adore them and love it when I buy them.

  • Great taste and value for money

I purchased the Woolworths rice bars in vanilla with choc chips for my kids to snack on and I loved them. What were supposed to be my kids lunch box snacks became my indulgence. They taste just as good as the big branded products but at a much cheaper price. They come in a few different variety of flavours which I look forward to trying out soon.

  • Kids like, I don't

I really don't enjoy the taste or the quality of Woolworths Select Vanilla Rice Bars. For me, they taste to manufactured, not at all nice.

However, on the odd times my kids get Woolworths Select Vanilla Rice Bars, they absolutely love them!

I don't rate Woolworths Select Vanilla Rice Bars very highly but, my kids do!

  • Okay if you've never tasted the leading brand version!

I'm a firm believer in giving any cheaper alternative (home brand version) of leading products, and have found some lovely replacements to my more expensive/popular groceries by giving them a try. Unfortunately, these won't be a permanent item in my pantry. They just don't come close to the main brand one, just not as tasty overall which is the main factor with a treat such as these! Not too bad, but not terribly good either.

  • Not for me - kids love them!

Again, I picked up a packet of Woolworths Select Vanilla Rice Bars on a reduced sale (I wonder if they're deleting the line?). Personally, I really don't like these bars, I find overly sweet, plasticity and sticky. In saying that however, my kids love them! I really don't understand why. Oh well, it's a very occasional treat, and not everyday.

  • Awful

These woollies vanilla rice bars are gross! One bite out of it and I hated it, bland and had the most awful smell to them. The price is ridiculous I would much prefer to buy LCMs when they are on special for 6pk for $2. Quality is awful, the taste was discusting, they were very over priced. I would not recommend these and I won't be buying them again ever! Not a winner in this household at all!

  • Sticky snacks

I bought it from Woolworth last week where there was some discount in it.. It is good but it sticks in the mouth and it is sweet as well, but the choc dip was a great mix with it, my child liked it but i don't think she can have it daily, its bit more sweet than normal oats or nutty bars, but you can enjoy it once a week or when you go out for picnic, i would recommend it as a snack which you can eat occasionally.

  • Not a regular pantry item

I bought a packet of the Woolworths Select Vanilla Rice Bars with milk chocolate drops today because they were reduced sale. Once again, my girls were overjoyed to have them but I found them to sickly sweet. Not my favourite snack food but every once in a while is okay I think. Certainly wouldn't stock them in the pantry on a regular basis.

  • icky

I bought these a while ago when I was on a small budget, they didn't taste nice at all compared to lcm bars. The taste was off, the texture was off and I just didn't like them at all. I think due to quality they should be cheaper. We didn't even eat them all, my kids were sent some as a treat with their school lunch and then they wouldn't eat them after trying one bite. My eldest had one put back in her lunchbox for a week before I just threw them out, waste of money and I don't even know why still on shelf, couldn't imagine many people would purchase them. Both myself and children would rather eat a piece of fruit then these and for my kids that's saying something.

  • just like lcms....only stickier

so while we all do like this product, they are sweet and super sticky. you will find the rice bubbles from this, stuck to things. trust me, i'm so careful about cleaning up after my children eat, but the rice bubbles will stick to their clothes, hair and chairs, end up on the floor and stick to your feet!

these are worth buying. just beware that this is not a great idea to eat in the car or in public without wipes

  • Very sweet

Woolworths Select Vanilla Rice Bars were purchased when they were on special as I find them very expensive for what they are. Its similar to LCM's but sweeter and stickier. The kids enjoyed them but I wouldn't be giving one to them everyday due to the amount of sugar that is in these bars. They are fine for an occasional treat.

  • An occasional treat!

Woolworths select rice bars are ok but, they are something I wouldn't buy all the time. The kids love them however, and get very excited when they see the rice bars in the pantry. In our house, the bars are considered to be an occasional food and not an everyday treat.

A treat not an everyday snack. My son loved these and asked for them a lot for morning and afternoon teas but I had to be strict for him not to have them whenever he asked for them. They are very, very sweet…he liked that they were sticky and liked making a mess while eating a bar.

  • Too unhealthy

Like the similar versions in other brands, I don't like this as a snack for kids, as it has very little nutritious value, and loads of sugar. It's not something that fills kids up or gives them sustained energy.

Personally I don't think they taste too good either, although the kids think they are good (no doubt due to how sweet they are).

How to choose the best lunch box for school

When you’re searching for a kids’ lunch box, take the time to work out what will best suit their needs. If you make the right choice and invest in a quality one, it will last many years.

  • Box, bento or bag? If your child doesn’t like different foods touching, a bento lunch box is a great choice. Also, think about whether they prefer cut-up or whole fruit; a bento is better suited to cut food, while bags and boxes suit whole fruit. Bags are fantastic if you like to pack separate containers, like smaller bento or snack containers.
  • Freshness is a must – An insulated bag or box will keep everything cool and fresh until snack and lunchtime. But you can also get boxes that come with cold and ice packs. Remember, kids’ lunches often sit at room temperature for up to 5 or 6 hours before they’re eaten, so insulation and coolness are important. Check out how to keep school lunches safe in the heat.
  • Easy-to-clean design – Check if the box is dishwasher-safe, or for lunch bags, if they’re machine-washable.
  • Leak-proof – The last thing you want is a soggy mess at lunchtime, so if buying a hard lunch box, look for designs that are leak-proof with proper seals.
  • Child-friendly – Depending on your child’s motor skills and independence, you may need to start with a product that’s simple to open and close.
  • The right size – We tend to pack way too much in our kids’ lunches, so think about how much realistically you’ll need to pack for your child when choosing the size of their lunch box. You may also need to consider the size of their school bags.

What to put in kids’ lunch boxes

Health professionals agree that kids need a good balance of lean protein, grains, fruit and vegetables throughout the school day. Skip the processed food and try to reach for whole foods that pack a punch in the nutrient department. Here are some great ideas:

  • Grilled chicken or turkey wraps with fresh salad
  • Crackers and vegetable sticks with healthy dips like hummus
  • Whole-grain pasta with cherry tomatoes and your choice of cheese
  • Zucchini slice cut into rectangles for easy stacking in an insulated box
  • Almond-meal slice with raspberries or blueberries – or both!
  • Vegetarian sausage rolls – these freeze well and make a great meat-free lunch when cold.

  • That lunchbox comparison table is handy to have. It helped me make a decision on which lunchbox to buy next for my daughter who is starting kindergarten. I needed to upgrade her lunchbox but wasn’t sure which way to go. The table helped me with my decision. I ended up going with the BBOX and have found a cheaper lunch bag from a department store that it fits in.

    Reply

  • I do not know if anyone else has picked up on this or not, but every bag mentioned in the table above is a ‘designer’ brand. There are plenty of more affordable options that aren’t over $40. I have never spent that much on a lunchbox – even from Smiggle. The cheaper brands last just as well too.

  • Getting ready for the return to school has started to kick in so this was a timely read. We have the yum box and i love it, it is so easy for my daughter to open and close on her own. I find the lunch cooler bags also a great idea however some days depending on what else needs to go to school, they can be quite bulky to include in the school bag. I need to do some more research this year as i like the idea of being able to watch it in the washing machine, that is a clever idea.

  • Along with all of the other back to school products; there is also a good range of lunch boxes available for people to buy. It has been fun to see the wide range of bottles and lunch boxes that are available for the new year for school and for work.

  • Lunch boxes have come such a long way since my eldest was a kid, he’s now 26! There’s really a solution to everything from food heating, cooling, dividers, pockets etc etc. Lunch boxes are a real fashion accessory and so on-trend these days. I personally love the Bento lunch boxes. They save on plastic and separate different foods.

  • I am such a huge fan of Bento lunch boxes and Bento. Food should be so many wonderful things; including delicious, fun, colourful and nutritious too. Lunch is a favourite meal because the body is ready for some more calories and a boost of energy. Food looks so good in Bento lunch boxes.

  • So so many fantastic options! We use the montii co ones for our kdis and swear by it. Its lasted 3 years so far and still standing strong, like new since the first day using it. They are so durable and i find cleaning them to be the easiest for us.

  • There are so many great lunch box option out there indeed ! I’ve always liked the Bento style lunch boxes for my kids. It reduces the use of plastic lunch bags and packaged food which aren’t very good for the environment and it encourages to present a good variety of foods (which is not only better nutrition wise but lao to prevent our kids from getting bored with same foods all the time.

  • There are some really fabulous options here. So many variations of colour, shape and size. I love the bento style lunch boxes, so handy to keep food separate and eliminate the use of plastic packaging. The machine washable bags are a great idea too. They can get grubby so fast, this would be so much easier to maintain

  • This has gotten much easier since my kids hit high school – they have strong opinions about their lunch boxes, so I don’t have to think about it so much anymore! However, I am strongly in favor of bento style boxes regardless of their age. They’re easy to clean, easy to pack, and invite appropriate sized portions.

  • Great article! Our kids are so lucky, when it comes to lunchboxes, they really are spoilt for choice. There are so many to pick from. Regarding sandwiches, my eldest son, used to hate sandwiches for school lunches. It wasn’t until many years later that I discovered that he’d throw out his sandwiches in the playground bins. My son’s an adult now and he still hates sandwiches. He only likes “hot” lunches. So glad he lives on his own now and can make his own “hot” lunches just the way he likes them.

  • This is super useful article and thank you. I can see so variety of lunch boxes from every store. Always wonder which one would be more convenient to use by little hands. I love some of these lunchboxes to give it a try for this year. And then decide to go with suitable ones

  • Wow, lunch boxes have really come such a long way from when I was taking a lunch box to school. Feel old, like “back in my day”, but we were lucky to have options like are available now. While I like some of these designs, I feel like they aren’t super practical.

  • These lunchboxes are beautiful but are they really worth the expensive price tag? I have been through so many lunch boxes and bags over the years and found the best it to use an insulated lunchbox bag with ice brick and use small containers to keep individual items fresh and assessable.

  • I love the bbox lunch boxes. They are so reliable and tough when kids throw their bags around. Easy to wash and store. I have used the we can be tiny snackies at home too. The boys love choosing a certain animal shape. They wash well, are durable and great quality.

  • My kids are old enough now to pack their own lunches and I am so happy to see the great choices they are making. They take left over meals, cook food in the morning to take and now I am confident they aren’t throwing away sandwiches! I do have the chilly bags for them, I find they fit better into bags

  • Love our bento b.boxes. So easy to pack. I do however worry that they’re made of plastic, not metal….

  • My daughter uses a bento box now for work and sometimes an insulated bag in summer, but when she was at school it was a rectangular lunch box with no compartments. It was very easy to wash each day, just the box and lid, and it could still be filled with rolls/sandwiches and snacks.

  • Lunchboxes are so important these days. Back in my day it was a brown paper bag or the exact same lunch box that everyone else had and there were three compartments. Today its such a fashion statement and as much as the lunchbox itself is judged so are the contents.
