There’s one thing running out of plastic Ooshies or mini milk collectables, but don’t dangle the reward of glass containers or Masterchef knives and then tell me you don’t have any more to give me.

As soon as I got wind of the latest promotions our main supermarkets were running, I started strategically shopping to maximise my credits. I thought the Coles MasterChef knives were pretty cutting edge and I am in love with the Woolworths glass containers so I have been saving up my credits for a free shopping spree.

No More Stock!

It turns out that I may be too late and I’m not happy! Shoppers across the country are reporting major shortages of the grown-up kitchen collectables at both Coles and Woolworths and it’s not really known which stores will be getting more stock, if at all.

I guess I should have learned my lesson from previous collectable campaigns where the frenzy of collecting caused stock to disappear faster than the shops could keep up.

But shouldn’t the retail giants also have learned their lesson? Why didn’t they over-produce the containers and knives so there was plenty of products available for everyone who earned them?

The Knives Are Out!

There’s no point in running a loyalty program when the result of it is actually the opposite – furious customers who feel hard done by. Yes, I know ‘it’s free’, but I spent enough in store to be entitled to my glass container or a big sharp knife!

Consumers have been left frustrated over promotions run by supermarket giants Woolworths and Coles, complaining about stock drying up well before each of their intended official end dates.

Until Stocks Last….

The Coles promotion ends on 9 February, while the Woolworths campaign ends on 16 February, or while stocks last. And I guess that last bit is the pertinent info. “Until Stocks Last” protects the shop legally but it certainly doesn’t protect them from consumer’s wrath when they run out weeks before.

There Are None Left!

“So how can I get my free containers? There are none left, I’ve spent two grocery shopping trips at Woolies just for these,” one livid consumer wrote on the Woolworths social media page.

“Woolworths I saved 65 Container points and just like the damn Ooshies, you ran out before I got to use all my points. Why do you keep failing at this so badly. You said it would be restocked, I go to order and there’s NONE. I had ordered one last time and nada,” another angry shopped ranted.

“Woolworths your container promotion is really a scam. Got my 39 points and I’m one point off 40 with three weeks left and I’ve been advised you’re completely out of stock,” another added.

One BIG Rip-Off

Many claimed that these campaigns are just a “scam” and a “rip off” as the supermarkets are using them to attract shoppers to spend more, knowing that they don’t have the freebies to give out.

Similar grumblings have been made by Coles shoppers.

“The 20 point knives ran out in our area well before the end of the promo, or are you ok with encouraging people like myself to keep building their points balance to have them sitting there for no reason but to remind us how greedy you are?,” one disgruntled shopper said.

There Is More Stock On Its Way….Apparently

Yahoo! News reached out to Woolworths for a comment and the supermarket has ensured customers that more stock is due to arrive.

“Since launching last year, we’ve had an incredible response from Woolworths customers who have collected our free glass containers. The aim of the glass containers is to support those who are looking to make every meal count, by providing storage solutions to reduce food waste, but also help customers’ shops go further, a Woolworths spokesperson said.

“Due to shipping delays caused by Covid, port restrictions, and high customer demand, some stores are temporarily out of glass containers. Rest assured, we have more shipments of additional glass containers on the way that will be distributed to stores across Australia in the coming days and weeks.

“As with many of our collectables, this is a while-stocks-last promotion. Customers can still redeem containers as more stock is distributed in the weeks ahead.”

  • I fail to see how something is a ‘rip off’ if it’s FREE. I fail to see how something is a ‘rip off’ when it’s your choice to opt in. I fail to see how it’s a ‘rip off’ when every man and their dog knows it’s ‘while stocks last’ and that you can purchase these items without using the point system. To all the whingers — stop being tight wads and buy the items outright if you absolutely, must have, can’t bare to live without these once in a lifetime, never before seen items or similar anywhere for sale, ever 🙂 🙂

  • A lot of people just bought the knives outright – you were allowed to do that. I never did, but saw people doing it. How many ever credits they were worth then that’s how much they cost to buy. Could b why there’s no stock left?
But both promotions are rip offs – 1 credit per $20 spent.

  • I managed to get two of the knives that I really wanted, so was very happy (although I have points left over for another but can’t find stock anywhere ….) I haven’t been able to use my Container points because no stores have stock at all!

    • We had lots of leftover points too- but we are happy with what we got just for doing our usual shopping.

  • I collected all the containers that I wanted (didn’t want to two smallest ones) just by picking up what was available when I had some points to cash in. I ended up with leftover points, but I didn’t want to double up on the containers so never bothered to cash the last ones in. Sometimes when in store there were none on display, but when I asked they always went out the back and got more to fill it up so I had no issues myself.

  • I got credits enough for the smaller one but they said they had none, this was 2 weeks ago. I really wanted one too. Sad.

  • Yes, I’m also a sucker, but for the LAST time. It’s not easy building sufficient points for the Utility Knife, when only shopping for two. I’ve been checking my local stores for 3 weeks and nothing. As a show of good faith I would like to see Supermarkets give a one off $20, off your next $20+ shop if the Supermarket cannot supply what you have legitimately earnt.

  • Got my containers, just added to my shop as they were available online. It literally says while stocks last for a reason. It doesn’t serve the purpose of the promotion for the store to “over produce” stock. You do have to be smart about it and take what you can get when its available – instead of waiting till I had enough for a bigger container (which I knew everyone would be grabbing as soon as they could) I ended up with two smaller ones. If you know you won’t spend enough to qualify for the bigger items you’re essentially rolling the dice as to if they’ll still be available when you have enough points.

  • Not a lot of incentive to get these but I’ll have to make sure the promo isn’t over and I lose out

  • First of all I would never start strategically shopping to maximise my credits ! I just buy what I normally buy and when a freebie is not in stock I don’t mind at all. It’s a freebie, I don’t need it and can live without it.

  • Yeap, i am one of this suckers – finally earnt enough and guess what? No more Woolies glass containers left. Yes i know they are free but i what really looking forward to this container for my little struggling single family with 2 kidlet

  • Same here, none left even tho I collected enough points well before the promotion ended

  • I got the knives when our local Coles restocked and my husband managed to get a container when he went to a small Woolies, there was none left when I tried. We didn’t move our shops just went to where is closest depending on where we were staying so I was braced to kiss out but luckily got what I earned this time.

  • Earned the points but none to collect either

  • I went to look at the knives about a month ago at Northam and none told they weren’t getting anymore and that is Bull I live on my own and took me a while to get enough for one and it’s not fair when people have bigger shops than me and have no trouble reaching what they need it’s like we aren’t as important as the big shoppers to me. Then Woolworths Northam a staff member was grabbing some Pyrex dishes and taking them out the back and I had enough points to get one and I managed to only get that one and it really stinks.

  • Annoying? Yes! Scam? No! Just a clever marketing ploy.

  • Definitely learnt my lesson not to wait until ast minute. It sucks but consumers are buying the stores out!

  • The knife promotion has been going for a few months now. I do my groceries between aldi and Coles and have still managed to get 3 knives in that promotional period. I probably had enough for one more knife but didn’t bother to look. And it’s not really a scam unless you go out of your way to spend $20, when you only needed bread, in order to get one point!

  • I have only just saved 20 credits for the MasterChef knifes at coles. I was at one of my local coles on friday & lady worker said they sold out & pretty much same right across all local coles but she stated I ring coles customer care to find out if they restocking since they stated a certain time after promotion ends to redeem points for knifes. I rang coles customer care on Saturday for lady to shut me down quite quickly saying it’s a promotion with flybuys so need to call them but they not open weekends, so I waited till today monday to call flybuys. I called flybuys & they had me on hold for like 15 mins before even talking to anyone. I finally got someone for them to say oh no its a coles promotion so ill transfer you to coles customer care right now ????????. I wasnt impressed by the ring around by both coles customer care or flybuys. I hanged up & just rang my 3 local coles for them to say no we soldout & no more coming in as was as stock lasts. I have more points with Woolworths of 40 as I shop more there as their suppermarket closer but I haven’t checked what stock available yet as not really needing suppermarket till Tues or Wednesday so will see then. These promotions are scams. Im not happy as not fair on customers who cant afford to spend up bigger like me to rank points higher quicker to claim.

  • Yes they changed the end date to earn bonus credits by 4 days, why not continue to end of week specials? Then cos ‘they’ve run out ‘ of stock, “no promotion finished “. This is very frustrating ????

  • I managed 4 knives from coles but no containers from woolworths. I made sure to grab the knives as early as I could to avoid missing out. I quite like them, they chop qujte well so far.
