Popular sippy cups are being recalled amid concerns that a component of the bottle containing lead could break off.

The ACCC has issued a recall for ‘For Baby and Up Green Sprouts Stainless-Steel Sippy Cups’. The 6-ounce (117 mL) stainless-steel bottles have a detachable base and include a silicone sippy spout with coloured plastic lid, collar and handles. The bottles come in pink, navy, aqua and green.

According to the ACCC the base of the bottle could break off exposing a solder dot that contains lead and it poses a poisoning risk to children. “If lead is ingested by young children it can cause adverse health effects,” the ACCC explained.

Sippy Cup recall

For Baby and Up issued a statement saying it was recently made away that the Green Sprouts Stainless-Steel Sippy Cups were manufactured with a solder dot containing lead that creates a vacuum seal between the internal and external steel layers.

“Testing of this component was omitted by the CPSC-approved third party lab because this part of the product is inaccessible under normal use. Had we been aware that a component containing lead in these products could become accessible, we wouldn’t have put them on the market; now that we know, we are voluntarily recalling these products.

“There is negligible risk to the health and safety of users. We and Green Sprouts Inc. are undertaking the costs and challenges of this recall voluntarily because our customers’ health and safety must come first.”

The sippy cups have been available to purchase nationally online and at the following traders:

  • Amazon
  • Rudi Patootie
  • Wilkinson Jewellers
  • Get Nailed
  • Natural Living Foster
  • Banovich Pharmacy
  • Fiona Stanley News

The cups were available for sale between 13 January 2020 and 29 November 2022.

Anyone who has one the sippy cups is being urged to stop using it immediately and contact For Baby and Up for a full refund.

  • I think its pretty bad that they need to use lead in a kids cup at all but I’m glad they are on to it pretty quickly and taking a cautious approach. Better safe than sorry…

    • Yes I don’t understand either why they have to use lead in the first place

I ‘ve never had a sippy cup of this brand and always wanted (and still do) cups and bottles that are see-through

  • Scary!
I’ve never used a sippy cup with either of my kids nor have I ever heard of or seen this brand.

  • This is really concerning, I mean why is the manufacturer using even a tiny amount of lead in a sippy cup? Surely there is another type of solder dot that can be used that doesn’t contain lead?

  • Wow, how amazing that this was picked up for a recall. Someone is paying attention.

  • So scary! Hopefully not many have purchased here
