How old were your babies when you switched them over to formula, if you have?

I have 3 kids and have had issues with my milk with all but am feeling guilty about having to switch even though I know she needs it to be full.

  • It is possible to have plenty of milk but practically no nutrition in it. If your baby seems to be wanting a lot of extra feeds and not sleeping properly it may be time to switch formula early or at least supplement. I know of 2 Mums whose milk had very little supplement. The same happened with every baby they had.

  • My first had a few bottles of formula as a newborn when I had trouble with my milk coming in. She didn’t need it again. Number 2 I’ve been lucky so far and she hasn’t needed formula.

I have friends who’ve had to supplement though. Try a bottle at night before bed to start with. You could still ring the Australian Breastfeeding Association helpline for advice and some people swear by Pinky McKays Boobie Bikkies to boost supply. However some people just have trouble with low supply. Good luck.

  • I gave up on breast feeding very early on.
