My almost three year old has had his first buzzcut, not his first haircut but the first all-over shearing of all his blonde locks. Now he looks like a brown-haired hedgehog.
I wanted to hold out on this one because I was afraid he would look too rough and tough or too old and he would cease looking like the sweet boy I know once his floppy fringe was gone. But…
He’s a busy one. Who hates to sit still. Regular visits to the hair salon add up. And we have a newborn now. So… buzzcut at home it is to be, for now.
Mostly he was okay with the actual clipping. Some bits of hair tickled and found their way down into his nappy. He had to have the tv on to keep him sitting down. (Yes, I know – but did I mention I am using CLIPPERS near his sweet head?) Even with Channel 22 on for distraction, after a few minutes, he had had enough. “All done!” He said and went to get up. Wait! I still hadn’t started the second side…
What surprised me? Seeing yet another new look underneath – how many can one kid have? After every haircut, he looks new again. Here was my boy showing off a big old moon face. I could see not only his wide forehead, but bags under his eyes (this weather! Too hot for anyone to sleep, and did I mention the newborn?) I can see every expression that crosses his face.
What was most interesting was his expression as he looked at the new him in the bathroom mirror. With real curiosity leant into the glass and said, “I look very different.”
Yes, you do. And now with less hair, I can almost see it happening.
