I am a mum to 4 kids but my youngest son aged 6 has been developementally delayed from a young age well now he is in kindy and i thought he was doing really well especially on the social side of things cos he has never interacted with any kids only his brothers and sister but now the school is saying he is going to have to repeat kindy my problem is do i start him at a new school and repeat him or leave him at his school that he is use to but he won’t move on to year 1 with his friends that he is comfortable being around.

  • It would be interesting to know how you went this decision. It is always a difficult decision; with pros and cons for both choices.

  • After explaining the situation to him, and ask him what he would prefer. You may be surprised by what he has to say.

  • Oh that’s tough! I’m really not sure what to do.

  • Well I hope you got him to repeat as he would have made new friends and it is best for him to stay back now than later in his schooling.

  • Lots of kids repeat, I wouldn’t be too concerned about it. The teachers are pretty good with it & have ways of dealing with the repeaters so that they don’t feel left out etc.

  • My son is in year 10, I started him young (he turned 5 the February he started kindy), and have wished someone had told me to hold him back ever since. He was diagnosed with ADHD in year 1, I did ask the headmaster when he was in year 4 about repeating which he was very certain would be the wrong thing – even though the kids his age were the ones he’d be with (and he was already playing age related sport with them). Anyway I think keep him at the same school as he’s settled there and he can be a “help” for the teacher with the new kindy kids.

  • A friend of mines little boy repeated prep, they keep him with the same teacher because she knew where he was at. He loved the idea of already knowing the rules and whats expected, where all the newbies had to learn from scratch and he was a ‘big boy’ tht could help the newbies. i hope this helps
