  • Wasn’t around in my child bearing days. Interesting to read about it though, never heard of anyone actually doing it though

  • I remember reading up on this with number two. When I spoke to the obstetrician about it, he said that often there is a small delay in the clamping anyway but overall it doesn’t make much difference. Funny, because there was a lot of literature on it.

  • I’m of the opinion that if there was scientific evidence that a delay in cord clamping is of benefit to the baby then it would be common practice. There is your answer.

  • Ive read about this and really wish i had heard about it when my kids were born, i think every woman should be told about things that can be done.
You never know what goodness is actually in the cord after baby is born and whats the harm in leaving it attached.
I know not all doctors like leaving it attached as they think it can cause complications with baby but it really should be left up to the mum.

  • i posted a question on this a while back but i only got a few answers. so i’ll be checking back to see if you get more on here!! i read that its VERY beneficial for the baby to wait until cord stops pulsating or placenta is birthed before the cord is cut- as there is still a lot of nutrients they can get i.e just 2 minutes of delayed clamping gives them a big increase in their iron reserve. There is no increased risk by doing it and your baby will have 32% more blood volume then one who had their cords cut straight away.
I really want to ask for this delay with my next baby- i’m interested to know how often women are doing it though.

    • Thanks for your explanation. I really had no idea about this. My how things can change not even a decade on with new revelations in health.

  • I really do not know what you mean and I have no idea when my kids cords were clamped as I could not see from my position but I assumed it was soon after birth as they were handed to me with the clamp on. I just checked with Hubby and they put a clamp on either side of the cut site for him to cut the cord as soon as they were born.
What are the proven benifits of delaying the clamping of the cord……even animals chew the cord as soon as they can get to it and this can be done before the whole baby has even completely come out…..
