Hello!

Our new Spring project is to build a fish pond in the backyard. We love the sound of running water and we love to watch fish swim. We are planning our budget for our new project. We want a medium sized pond with lots of little fish rather than big fish. We love native plants and want a fish pond that blends in with our backyard and environment. Has anyone built a fish pond from scratch? Would love your suggestions and tips on fish pond style, fish and plants. How long did it take to build your fish pond and I would love to see photos of your fish pond.

  • you can buy kid’s sand and water shells. they are a good size and instant liner and sealed.

  • We have 5 fish in a very deep bird bath. The fish have 2 native water plants to hide under. Has been thriving for about a year. We have had more success with this than in ground pond. If doing I ground pond, I would use plastic moulded variety.

  • Never built one from scratch, have used moulded ones to make life easier lol

    • Sounds like a good idea – do you know the costs?

  • No tips personally, but I understand it’s important to avoid leakage.

  • As said in the previous comment thats the easy way to do it, i would also suggest to go to the local pond or sanctuary with a little fish net and container and try to catch some tadpoles so you might get some frogs in your back yoad as well.

  • My dad made a duck pond when I was little. He dug a hole and lined it with industrial plastic, filled it up and away they went
