Hello!

Today we took our family fishing of a jetty in the mid west of WA. Using only hand lines we caught 5 fish released 3 and kept 2 to eat. Such a great learning opportunity for kids – especially about where good comes from, sustainability and environmental issues. Cooking the fish in the caravan park camp kitchen and enjoying a family meal together enhanced the experience. Needless to say, we aren’t avid fisher people, but enjoy the challenge every so often.

  • What a great time and fabulous learning opportunity for your kids. I’m sure it will be a memory that stays with them forever.

  • That sounds wonderful. Oft times, the simple things in life are the most enjoyable things. You don’t need to go overseas, or go to a flash resort. My family loves camping. We have done some overseas and flash resort holidays but the camping holidays are the ones we enjoy the most. Out in the bush with a campfire and a million stars. We play board games and card games and fish. The best family time ever. No one is rushing off to go somewhere or on their electronic devices. Every day brings a different adventure in the bush too.

  • I love fishing. I am looking forward to my little ones being old enough to share the fun as a family!

    • Yes, its great when they are old enough to join in – we take a chair, blanket and snacks for ours to keep them entertained as they aren’t as patient as adults. Its a lot of fun though and they are fully engaged when getting nibbles and even more so when something is on the line.

  • I can’t deal with dead fish, but god on you!

    • Unless you are strictly vegetarian or vegan, it doesn’t hurt to understand about where our food comes from. A dose of reality helps kids better appreciate this fact.

  • We have some great times fishing also, not a fan of taking the hook out of the mouth thou!

    • To help with catch and release (and just easy hook removal always) flatten the barb on fish hooks with pliers prior to use. You can still easily catch the fish but it’s heaps easier to remove the hook.

  • It is also a good educational experience – learning about different fish; edible fish and other fish.

    • Totally! You can never know what’s on the end of the line until you see it.

  • yeah we will fish every now and then but it is not a big deal. it is just for some fun

    • When the fish are caught from a jetty and just about too big for a decent sized esky, it’s a bit more than just a bit of fun!! Try exciting, thrilling, highly memorable, confidence building, and a fantastic learning and culinary experience as well…

      • haha i meant that it was just a bit of fun for my family. we aren’t really fishing people BUT in saying that, i have never caught anything fancy! and i usually toss them back (without kissing them, yuck lol) i am glad that you enjoy it and it is great to bond with the family regardless of what the activity is. :)
