My beautiful 8 year old Daughter refuses to wear her reading glasses at school even though she knows they will help her eyes regain strength so she can see with out them. She says that the kids at school will laugh at her and no matter what I say to her she still wont wear them. I have spoken to her teacher and she said she would make sure she wore them but she hasn’t. we argue all the time about her wearing them and all that happens is she ends up in tears. I really don’t know what to do to help her!! :(

  • I am sure that my Mum would have had this problem with me except that I wore glasses from the age of 3 and still do at 32, so by the time I got to that age of caring about what my peers thought I suppose I didn’t because I was so used to wearing them. Positive reinforcement is the only thing bar gluing them to her head that might eventually get through. Maybe ring an expert in children’s matters that maybe able to give you some tips to help make it work.

  • this is an age old problem – my gf at school used to bury hers in the garden!! I wouldn’t worry so much unless her grades slip – Hey did you go to an eye specialist or just an optometry shop – we got VERY different results with a specialist as opposed to a shop…. Nick needed glasses at the shop (starting with O…), and the specialist said borderline, leaning towards nil glasses, but monitored yearly. Good luck!

  • Had same issues with my boy. Also spoke to teacher, who assured me she would make sure glasses were worn when needed. Son started telling me (when I asked him at home ‘Where are your glasses?’) he would say he left them at school. But when teacher asked him same question, he would say he left them at home. When in fact they were hidden away somewhere. It took us a little while to figure out this was happening. He was so sneaky

  • is she able to get contacts or laser eye surgery? she is at a stage in her development where her image and self esteem is developing. She may be the only one with glasses and therefore views it as embarrassing. Maybe see who her fav celebs are and then look for pics that show them in glasses! Try to boost her confidence and tell her that all the hipsters wear glasses and people wear them without lenses in them, just as a fashion statement! She is in the majority by wearing them! It is not just for the elderly!

  • If she’d give it a go she might not have a problem – our son has never been teased.

  • My daughter was the same. She is now 12 and today picked up her new glasses that she chose all by herself and loves – one black and one red pair. We helped her by letting her choose initially, but also pointing out people she admires who wear glasses – from family members, to sporting and TV stars. Having the optometrist talk to my daughter again and tell her the importance of wearing her glasses also helped – sometimes they will listen to others when they wont listen to us. Good Luck!
