Hello!

I have recently been absolutely amazed at the amount of lost property our kindy teachers come across on a weekly basis. Reminders are sent every term to please label all property (clothing, drink bottles, lunch boxes) yet every day at least 1 new item is tossed into the never ending tub of “lost property”.

Is it really that hard to purchase a $3 laundry pen for clothing and at minimum write on sellotape on your kids lunch boxes and drink bottles (I get not wanting to deface the outside of bags etc but laundry pens work great on the inside as most nowadays have either a plastic inner or a special place to write names).

We are not by any means a wealthy family but we’ve worked hard for what we have and make sacrifices for unimportant items i.e. Foxtel / Sky TV, however I often note that many of the unlabeled items often belong to families that are less well off as us and I question would they be better off if they were not having to buy new hats, jackets, drink bottles on a frequent basis.

I spend a lot of time at kindy every week searching out names on items and putting them in the respective kids bags and the teachers have tried hard to get a system working in the cloak room to make this possible and get really surprised when I find beautiful and expensive children’s clothing sitting in a “unnamed” pile waiting to be dropped to a charity shop.

So best gift you can give to someone who has a child going to start daycare, kindergarten, school or any other for of care is a permanent laundry pen and/or write on dishwasher proof adhesive labels!

  • This post sounds a touch judgey. Even laundry marker washes off. Stickers and labels come off. Marker washes out in the dishwasher. People have a million things they are juggling at once. The thought that people have more money to throw away might be true, but you don’t know the other factors. Approach with kindness

  • Depending what wash-up detergent you use it does fade after awhile.
Why don’t parents check the labels to make sure they haven’t faded?
Our boy goes to a school that has not one but two lost property bins. Because the cleaners find some of them under the verandahs of out in the yard they go in the bins whether they have names on them or not. We’ve told him he has to put his lunch box back in his school bag as soon as he finishes eating his lunch but we still have to check the lost property bins sometimes.

  • I marked everything, and still things went missing. Some I managed to find on the lost property, thanks to having names on, some was never seen again….
