Hi just need advice or some points how do I get my 3 year old to listen to me when we are out he likes to run away from me and he thinks it’s a game. It annoys me when other people just stare at me I tell him to listen to me before we leave to go out I allways try the one, two, three but that never works I say I’m going to smack him but I never do . And also how do I get him to sleep in his bed he likes to sleep in my room but I can’t have him sleep in this all started when we started having storms.

  • My only advice is not to threaten something unless you are willing to follow through with the punishment. I have sat my children in time out in the middle of the supermarket when they misbehaved and have thrown toys in the bin that weren’t picked up after several warnings. I can tell you, I’ve only done them once (and my floor are clean!). It’s a hard age though – be patient and forgiving (on yourself).

  • Would you consider a leash? I know some judgemental people would stare but at least you keep your kids safe!!

  • How about a reward chart? Every night he spends in his own bed, he gets a sticker. When he gets 5 or 10 stickers, let him choose a bigger reward. Or maybe a special toy for bedtime only, like a nightlight or glow in the dark cuddly toy?

    • I have found reward charts to be helpful in the past.

  • There are children’s leads that may help with the running off but seems to me as though the lead may help. You may find it not that easy transitioning him from your bed to cot as he is 3 but perhaps he may be big enough for a bed of his own & you could lie with him reading to him, stroking his head, it may take a while & per serverence is a must, good luck hun :)
