I certainly felt guilty the other day after having my poor 6yo sons tummy x-rayed…. He had been complaining for weeks (intermittently and not very vocally) that his tummy was sore. I thought it was a result of having too many lollies or something he shouldn’t be eating (which I generally restrict). He has always been a fussy eater and very selective with what he eats and whenever it came to meal times, it felt as though it was an excuse not to eat by saying ‘my tummy is sore’, hence didn’t take him seriously.
Both me and Dad didn’t take it seriously… both working 7 days for a period of 4 weeks and never thought anything improper.
My son’s complaints became more frequent, so just prior to Easter I picked him up from school early, took him to the GP and got an X-ray referral. I wanted to take him for an x-ray straight away but had to wait till the Tue after Easter Mon.
Partner took him whilst I was at work and gave me a frightening call…. The poor thing had a build up of faeces in his entire large bowel which he couldn’t digest through his small intestines. I felt horrible.
I know life can be chaotic, but sometimes we have to actually listen to our kids as they may have a genuine complaint.
Although there were no symptoms… such as fever, vomiting or bloating (his tummy looked like a 6-pack), its still best to check it out.
Great to share stories with mum… we’re all still learning each day.
