Thomas Malucelli may have been propelled into the spotlight when he appeared on the 2023 series of The Bachelor, however his expertise extends far beyond winning over the hearts and minds of gorgeous women. Thomas is also a highly revered biohacking wizard.

Fuelled by his experience with feeling fatigued, strung out and “done with life”, prior to debuting on The Bachelor, the life coach and model underwent a 360-degree mind and body transformation where he discovered and fell deeply in love with biohacking. The result was a brand new muscular physique as seen in dramatic before and after images.

“Biohacking is like being your own mad scientist, but in a totally fascinating and health- oriented way,” Thomas says.

The current buzz about biohacking, also known as human enhancement, is huge. It’s a term used to describe do-it-yourself biology. This involves people making incremental, strategic changes to their bodies, diet, and lifestyle to improve their health, performance or well-being. You might start off by taking regular vitamins, then decide to do intermittent fasting, add a meditation practise, a new exercise plan and so on.

Having discovered biohacking in 2014 when at rock bottom, the 36-year-old says he was living an extremely unhealthy lifestyle where he had no energy, constant brain fog and exhaustion.

“I was working crazy hours as a restaurant manager and drowning myself in coffee and alcohol every single day,” he says. “I would have seven to eight coffees a day. At the time I thought to myself, ‘I’m getting old, it’s just normal.’”

After becoming frustrated with his low quality of life, Thomas explored options, however found himself lost and confused with the \ overwhelming amount of information that currently exists in the health and wellness space.

“We live in a world where so many people have platforms where they are telling us how to live, what’s good for us, what’s killing us and so on,” he says.

“Often the people disseminating this information are marketing a product. So, there’s this huge misconception that maintaining a high level of health costs a huge amount.

“Biohacking essentially encourages us to take a more personalised approach, recognising that what works for you may not work for the person across the street. It’s not a one size fits all approach to wellness.”

“To me biohacking is all about arming yourself with knowledge about your DNA, so that you can optimise your health.”

Thomas’s favourite bio hacks may sound simple, but he says they have given him a new lease on life. These include daily exercise, regular hydration, weekly fasting, and a cosy night-time routine.

“Exercise used to be a chore, but now it’s something that I do as a celebration of my mind and body,” he says. “It also helps rid anxious energy and boost endorphins before I start my day.”

“I also fast once a week for 24-36 hours which helps in reducing neurodegeneration and enhance neuroplasticity, accelerating learning capacity, improving memory, and lowering your blood sugar and insulin levels.”

One of Thomas’s favourite hacks is to drink 500ml of water upon waking up to help kick his body into gear for the day and help flush out toxins built up during sleep.

“Drinking enough water is crucial for an array of reasons. It helps to regulate body temperature, keep joints lubricated, prevent infections, deliver nutrients to cells and keep organs functioning properly. Being well hydrated also improves sleep quality, cognition, and mood.

“I even add a couple of pinches of salt to my water as a natural electrolyte as it helps the body to absorb needed minerals for optimal health. Electrolytes such as celtic salt are high in magnesium, potassium, calcium, and sodium. These minerals are key for muscle,  brain, and heart health.”

Thomas also stresses the importance of quality sleep when it comes to health. “I had to bid farewell to late-night Netflix marathons and replace them with limiting my screen time and blue light exposure after dark. I also don’t watch too many reality TV shows!”

  • What is with these ridiculous terms for everyday practices?

  • It’s good when we admit when something isn’t optimal or working in our lives and be prepared to make changes. This body has to take us far! We are our own science experiments, so have a bit of fun with it

  • Not sure about the fasting, I think that would make me really cranky being hungry!
But he looks great. Wish I was more into exercising rather than eating lol.

  • Good reminder to keep coffee consumption down and drink more water. If what he is doing with the changes works for him then that is all that matters.
