From onlooker to ‘partner’ – the changing role of the school parents.

Episode 3 of the Learning Early Series

Episode 3 of the Learning Early Series helps parents understand what is expected of them when their child starts school. Many parents with children who will soon be starting school, are uncertain about their new role and this episode offers parents some helpful advice. Psychologist Jodie Benveniste, who hosts the series, says that the education of a child is not the primary responsibility of the school but is a partnership between parents and teachers.

Parents are advised to consider themselves a ‘partner’ rather than an onlooker in the education process and this episode explains how parents can go about this.

  • With my eldest going into year two and middle girl in year 1, I found that a lot more schooling si done at home than when I was growing up. I also want to be involved, but its not as easy when you have other children. At our school we have volunteer days but cant bring siblings… I also made a oint to chat with the teachers regularly for updates and ideas on how to help at home.
