The chemicals inside your baby’s disposable nappies could be doing them more harm than good but how can you prevent these hidden dangers?

There is growing concern amongst parents about the hidden dangers lurking inside the disposable nappies they use on their little ones each and every day. While knowing what you are putting next to your baby’s delicate skin is a priority, it can be hard to work out exactly how to avoid these unwanted chemicals in the products you are choosing.

Worryingly, it has been found that some disposable nappies have even caused blistering and burns as a result of contact with fragrances, dyes, and other toxins. Truly scary stuff.  So just what are these hidden dangers and how can you avoid them?

Phthalates

Traditional disposable nappies use plastic in their construction that contains phthalates. Phthalates have been used in food packaging, detergents, and even children’s toys until they were banned in the US due to their toxicity. It’s scary to think, then, that you could be putting this same toxic plastic on your child’s sensitive skin without even realising they are there. Phthalates have been proven to disrupt the endocrine system, which is essential for healthy growth and development.

Ecoriginals Eco-Friendly Nappies are free from phthalates thanks to the absence of hidden plastics in their layers, making them both kind to your baby’s sensitive skin and kind to the planet! All parts of the nappy are sourced from naturally derived materials, including a corn starch top sheet and FSC wood pulp absorbent core, so you know exactly what is in each and every layer.

Due to their innovative Plantcell Technology, Ecoriginals nappy’s are a whopping 40% more absorbent. Ecoriginals Eco-Friendly Nappies also opt for a 100% cotton alternative, proving to be even more effective than their disposable counterparts.

Fragrance

Let’s face it, finding a nappy that smells good is pretty much an impossible task. Even if you do, it won’t stay that way for long! Despite this, a large number of disposable nappy brands continue to use fragrances in their products. Fragrance is one of the prime culprits for causing eczema and other allergies and is also a significant contributor to unwanted nappy rash and irritation.

When you are choosing a nappy or nappy pants for your bub, and want a fragrance-free option that still stacks up when it comes to wicking away moisture, consider Ecoriginals Eco-Friendly Nappies which contain no fragrances or perfumes.

PEG’s (Polyethylene Glycols) & Phenoxyethanol

They are found in countless personal care and cosmetic products but polyethylene glycols, or PEG’s, are a real worry when it comes to their inclusion in disposable nappies. PEG’s have been identified as human carcinogens, able to interfere with development and potentially cause nervous system issues.

Many disposable nappies use PEG’s in the back sheet as a thin film to prevent leaks, but Ecoriginals Eco-Friendly Nappies opt for a 100% cotton alternative instead, proving to be even more effective than their disposable counterparts.

Phenoxyethanol is of particular concern for infants, known to cause dermatitis, eczema, and could even lead to vomiting and diarrhea if ingested. Ecoriginals Eco-Friendly Nappies are also free from phenoxyethanol, giving you peace of mind that you are keeping your baby safe from any hidden dangers.

Triclosan

A nappy with anti-bacterial properties might sound like a good idea, but the triclosan contained in disposable nappies could have far more sinister consequences including harmful effects on your little one’s immune system and hormone disruption. In reality, triclosan is not an essential component of an effective nappy and is arguably an unnecessary addition.

By choosing Ecoriginals Eco-Friendly Nappies, you can prevent the potential health risks of exposing your baby to additional chemicals they don’t need to be exposed to as the nappies are free from triclosan.

Choosing a nappy for your baby is hard enough without having to worry that you could be exposing them to hidden dangers without even realising it. By selecting a world-leading brand like Ecoriginals, and opting for a biodegradable, environmentally conscious alternative, you can do your bit for the planet and have total peace of mind that your bub is in safe hands. • Surely the old fashioned reuseable cloth nappies are the way to go but then of course people are going to get all upset over the water used to clean them, the detergent and the electricity to run the washing machine and the dryer if needed on a rainy day. i dont think there is ever a perfect answer

  • Nappies have come a long way, but I can honestly say, whatever works best. I tried everything and when they’re younger it was always Huggies for me. As my son got older, I was able to go for other brands.

  • These sound like a good choice for nappies especially considering that alternatives may be potentially dangerous.

  • Wow id never expect that our nappies contain so many nasties

  • We have discovered that bub has very sensitive skin, and is prone to contact dermatitis which is quite nasty, im so happy I subscribe and get the ecoriginals wipes every 8 weeks. The nappies just didn’t suit bub so we use comfy koalas a very similar eco nappy.

  • I must admit I prefer cloth nappies. It isn’t that hard to wash them, it ends up much cheaper on the hip pocket and saves the landfill situation. A definite win all round.

  • That is very scary, so bound by these products every where that it is hard to get away from these products.

  • Interesting read. We always just buy Huggies as we’ve found it has given the best protection against leaks. I don’t think it has fragrance though?! I’ve actually never come cross a nappy that smells nice as in it being fragranced…

  • I always think my shower is fine, until I occassionally go into it with my contacts on and realise how bad it is! My partner sees past all the grime and doesn’t ever clean it, by the time I go to clean it I feel like the grout especially just can never get clean! The black just never goes away :( I’ll try this trick with baking soda and hopefully it can look a little better!
