The introduction of rituals and routines at home before a child starts formal schooling can play a big role in helping a child adapt to the school environment.  This is the advice offered in the second episode of the Learning Early Series, an online video series for parents who are about to embark on that next big step in parenting: being the parent of a school-going child!

Teachers at Early Learning Centres or primary schools use rituals and routines extensively as these induce calmness, relieve anxiety and offer structure to the day.  Parents can learn a lot from teachers and the way they communicate and  engage with children through routines.  This episode explains some of these rituals.

  • We’re big on routine here with 4 boys under 7, particularly in getting out the door in the morning and again from 5pm til bed time at 7! There is mayhem if the routine is not followed, however, this often happens and we gotta live and let live.

  • My partner loves routines, right down to his meals at night…. I am not such a ritual lover and enjoy more going with the flow, as I am more prodcutive this way, so it’ll be interesting to see how bubs goes once he’s born lol

  • also take the child to school a few mornings or afternoons to observe if they are nervous to see how kids are dropped off and picked up and get familiar with the surroundings of the school.

  • I found having an older sibling at school meant my little ones understood the morning routine before they started at school, it made leaving them so much easier and they slotted straight into their classes.

  • I start my kids on a routine from the moment they are born, The get fed, bathed and put to sleep at the same time everyday until I feel they are older and can cope with a more sporadic lifestyle
