Article Viral Image Showing What Milk Ducts Looks Like is Actually False

A photo of what the female breast muscle system looks like has left social media users amazed. But sadly it is actually all wrong!

On April 21, Twitter user @lemonadead shared a realistic illustration of what the inside of a female torso looks like — specifically, the muscles over the chest and the milk gland systems in the breasts.

The image quickly went viral with 138,000 likes and 45,000 shares, with commenters expressing surprise that they’d never before known that this is what a woman’s body breasts look like on the inside.

The image, which is of unknown origin, shows the female muscle system from the upper abdomen to the bottom of the neck.

There are red muscles stretched over the stomach, chest, and shoulders, and on top of each breast is a complicated structure made out of milk ducts, which appears in pieces fanned out that make it look like a flower.

The tweet clearly resonated with other social media users, many of whom realized for the first time that they, too, had never seen a female muscle system.

Sadly it’s not true

But Milk Meg has recently spoken out saying it is actually not true.

Sharing on Facebook Meg wrote, “Sorry to burst this beautiful flower bubble that’s gone viral! BUT it’s not true.

“Oh how I wish our glandular tissue looked like this! But it simply doesn’t.

“We have fat over, under and in the between this glandular tissue. The little branches leading to our milk ducts are tiny and go all over the place…not in a beautifully placed flower formation. Although that would be pretty cool!

“The photo underneath is drawn by an artist based on ultrasound of the lactating breast. More information can be found through research, including research written by Donna Gettes (2009) who looked at ultrasound research by Hartmann and Ramsay.”
