I always seem to be lamenting the fact that at least one of my kids are tired. All brought on undoubtedly by the fact that they were late to bed the night before (for any number of reasons). So let’s look at what is the ideal bedtime for kids.

I don’t think there’s any magic formula and try as I might I sometimes attempt to put one of my children to bed before the others.  Isn’t it fair that the 9 year old gets to stay up later than the nearly 4 year old? Rationally, of course, it makes sense. But try telling the little one that.  I’ve tried to explain to her that when you sleep you grow and that she has more growing to do, but she won’t have a bar of it.

So, we’ve reached a good middle ground that seems to work for everyone.  My two daughters (who share a bedroom by choice) both are ideally in bed by 7.30pm (and that’s stories read, teeth brushed etc) with lights out and no talking.  Eldest son (9) goes to bed at the same time but reads for between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on what type of day he’s had or what type of day he has coming up the next day.

The girls have seemed to accept this as a compromise – at least he’s not down hanging out with us or watching TV.

Doesn’t Always Go According To Plan

Some days if they’re all going crazy, World War III is erupting and hubbie and I are getting cranky, I just call it quits.  We drop everything, abandon any hope of clean teeth and just get them to bed.  I have been known to put them to bed in their clothes depending on how tired they are and how urgently they need to sleep.  It’s nothing a bath and a big brush in the morning won’t fix.

What The Chart Says

We recently shared a chart that showed the ideal bedtime for kids.

Many of our mums commented (as we did) that we were dismal failures which it came to bedtime for kids.

“Fail! Not that I needed the chart to tell me that. We don’t always even manage to eat dinner before my almost 5 year olds bed time,” admitted one mum.

However, others reminded us that charts like these can just put added pressure on mums, that we certainly don’t need.

“There is no such thing as failing…as long as you are trying your best and doing what works for you who cares what some chart says…children aren’t a one size fits all,” read one comment.

“This sort of thing is ridiculous and makes parents feel all sorts of pressure that they are failing their kids (or toddlers or babies). Children are all different. Their sleep needs are different,” said another mum.

What’s the night-time schedule like in your house? Any tips for mums struggling to get consistency in bedtimes? Anything you wish you’d done differently? And do you let them stay up late on the holidays? Tell us in the comments below.

  • When they are younger they have stayed up later and slept longer. Ad my son is jerking older and is no longer day napping he is in bed by 8pm but not everyday is the same. Depends on what we are doing or what we have in the next day. Sometimes he just won’t sleep so he does something quietly and we try again in 15mins and repeat until he goes to sleep

  • I wish the chart would cover teenagers too. I’ve a 14 and 15yr old. How late do your teenagers go to bed / wake ?

  • 7 year old goes to bed at 8:30, wakes about 6:15.It used to be 7:30 bedtime when younger. It’s hard when they insist they are not tired and especially during daylight saving.

  • Mine were usually in bed by 7.30 to 8.30 no matter what age they were. They always played outside for a good hour or two and all belonged to a club be it cubs, brownies, guides or scouts or some variant in between which usually started at 6 and finished at 7.30 and they were always too tired to stay up much after that. They woke around 6am – it just seemed to happen in our house without any problems.

  • My 4 does not sleep ????????‍♀️ Well barely !
He goes to sleep at 11ish every night sometimes later ????

    • I would write down when he sleeps and wakes during the night and when the info concerns you go to the GP for a referral to see an ENT to get a sleep test done

  • I thought that mine were going to bed too late but the chart says it’s probably too early. No wonder they protest!

    • Lol ! how old are they and how late do they wake and are going to bed ?

  • Earlier is better, but I can be confiscating books from under the covers at midnight!

  • The earlier the better – even if they get up early, they get the maximum amount of sleep that they need.

  • Hmmm my 9 & 11 year old go to bed between 8-8.30 most days sometimes 7.30 if tired. That was the routine until a few months ago. I’m trying to get them up at 6.30-7 at the lasest. I don’t think them staying awake until 9pm is good. Makes them too tired and grumpy not to mention hard to fall asleep.

  • My 6 year old is bath at 6:30 including teeth, bed at 7 and asleep by 8. We stick to it quite easily. Its annoying but having a routine you stick to does make things heaps easier.

  • Definitely a fail. We try and try but some days its like hitting one’s head against a brick wall. I don’t like charts at all. Little ones fall asleep earlier unless there is an underlying condition. I don’t mind if kids read in bed at all as long as they are in bed!

  • I always liked our kids to go on time to bed. I struggle with my 6yr old (T21). She’s up so early no matter how late I put her to bed. She went to bed around 9pm yesterday night and is awake from 4am this morning. She wakes in general between 3.30-4.30am I’m going to ask for a sleep test next time we visit the ENT specialist.

  • My kids had the 7am bedtime from about age 3 until school age. Then it gradually increased with age. There’s 3 years between my kids, so there was a half hour later bedtime for the older one when school began. Wake up time varied

  • 7.30pm until they are year 7
    8pm Year 7-8
    8.30 – 9pm year 9
    9.30- 10pm year 10-12

  • 7 .00 pm is our bedtime and its works for us

  • This is so unrealistic for me. We would never be able to go out for dinners etc if their bedtime was this early. Am I the only one

  • 7.30 is bedtime at my house, any later and it’s chaos the next morning.

  • My 2.5 year old has reading time from about 7:30-8pm every night, and then we tell him 2 made up short storied in bed and hes asleep by 8:30 at the latest

  • I only had two kids so bedtime wasn’t that much of a hassle. I had a few issues when the youngest was old enough to question why the older one got a later bedtime, but it was easily explained
