Woolworths has ditched plastic shopping bags, but the alternative has raised the ire of shoppers who say they aren’t up to the task.

Irate Woolies shoppers have taken to social media to share their frustrations, after the supermarket giant removed all 15c soft-plastic shopping bags from stores and online. It means if you forget your own shopping bags, the only alternative is 25c paper bags.

But it appears the paper bags aren’t tough enough to carry a load of groceries, with shoppers sharing their paper bag ‘fails’.

Woolworths responded to this shopper, saying, “Thanks for sharing these images with us and for reaching out about your experience with our paper bags.

“We’ve now shared this feedback with the relevant team for their awareness and review. We hope your future experiences with us are positive, thanks.”

However, she’s not alone, with others sharing their photos and experiences.

“You’re definitely not the only person, this happened to me last weekend and I noticed a women chasing cans through the carpark this evening after her bags broke,” Chantalle Handley commented.

The same fate befell me over the weekend when I did the weekly shop and forgot my reusable bags. My grocery-laden paper bags made it to the car, but no further, with one blowing out as I lifted it into the car.

Admittedly, they were probably overfilled, and this is a very ‘first world problem’. But, when groceries cost so much at the moment, it is frustrating if items are broken or damaged after falling out of a broken paper bag.

According to Woolworths, their paper shopping bag is designed to be reused, and can carry up to six kilograms of groceries.

“Our paper bags are made from at least 70% recycled paper and have been tested to carry up to 6kg through a range of conditions, whether it’s with chilled items or carried across long distances,” a Woolworths’ spokesperson said in a statement.

Coles has also committed to removing plastic bags by the end of June.

  • Aw nooooo. Good to know. I have re-usable bags and will keep re-using my plastic bags for as long as I can.

  • I still actually love my Plastic Bags find them so useful but seeing that they are getting rid of them soon I will use my ones that I have bought previously

  • I remember when I was young going shopping with my Nana when there was only paper bags, and carrying them home especially in the rain and they would end up with wet holes in them, then the shopping would go all over the footpath, Poor Nana, I don’t agree on Woolworths selling them they are expensive and useless

  • The problem is they try and put too much in them – I always tell them how many bags to use when they pack them – they are trying to fill them like the plastic ones and they are just not strong enough and on top of that they are way too expensive – try to take a couple of your own plastic ones

  • The paper ones are such a nightmare they break in 5 mins. So have shopping in one arm n usually child under other arm n my bags are usually sat in the car that I’ve forgot ????????

  • I have had problems with these paper bags with cold/frozen goods that wet the bag and break through before I get home.
Also when staff overload bags (pet food) again break through bags
These paper bags are only good for dry light items.
I will not pay $0.25c for a 1 off bag.
Need a better quality strong paperbag Woolies so we can reuse these bags

  • Originally paper bags didnt have handles, so they had to be carried with support underneath. Invest in some good quality foldable shopping bags and put them in all the likely items you go shopping with. Re-using something of quality is well worth it over the option of recycling paper bags that are incorrectly packed.

  • I can understand you wouldn’t go for the paper bags, but to be honest they do provide other option and that is to purchase the reusable canvas and cool bags

  • Ah yes have had this problem even when they’ve packed and delivered my groceries!

    Remember when bags were free?!

  • I like the paper bag option. But I’d only use it for a few light items etc. Ive had a plastic bag rip on me in store as soon as I paid for it and put groceries in.

  • Paper bags are never going to work for heavier items or sharper edges. I always keep my fabric ones in the boot. Notice how the paper ones are more expensive for something cheaper to produce and not reusable?

  • That’s disappointing. I haven’t used a paper bag yet. I’m still using plastic bags and reusable bags. I got a few still to use in the cupboard.

  • Personally have never had a problem. The only time I’ve had the paper bags is in deliveries/click and collect….and they tend to underpack them. In store, I try to take my own fabric bags.

  • They are so frustrating.
Mine didn’t make it from my car to my door.

  • Yes, totally useless. Received my click and collect in paper bags today, and with the way the Woolies staff had packed them, I was worried it wont hold from the car to the house.

  • Really… our groceries don’t make it to the car with the paper bags. Not made strong enough.

    Reply

  • Definitely have. They’re as useless as tits on a bull, especially if you have cans ofvdog food or the like. I avoid them like the plague if I can!!…????

  • Been quite a few times now, hubby usually gets the paper bags when we forget not to take ours from the car, I keep telling him the paper ones are not strong enough, we’ve had them tear from the handles, a tear in the bag, as they are not very thick & even a couple of times have not made it into the house, before the bag fell apart… guess it’s a clever ploy if you forget your bags, most will buy cheap paper bags? I know they’re good for the Environment, but certainly not that good for carry your shopping.

  • Oh this is bad! They should have tested it before making it available to public. I cant imagine this happening while you walk to the car park with 3 little ones!@
