You don’t have to spend a lot of money this Mother’s Day to make Mum happy. I like gifts that come from the heart and I think they can mean more then if you spent a lot. Check out my list of 5 great gifts that you can give Mum that are free or very low cost.

  1. Vouchers: Make Mum a pack of vouchers for IOUs that she can redeem at anytime. Think massages, helping set the table, washing the car, cooking her dinner, running a bath, making a cuppa, the list is endless.
  2. Flowers: Pick some flowers from the garden and put them in a vase, I think there’s something special about hand picked flowers.
  3. Draw: Mums love to receive handmade pictures, so draw or paint her a special card or picture for her to hang up and treasure.
  4. Food: Mums often do a lot of the cooking so give her the day off or at least help her out in the kitchen. Make her breakfast in bed or take her on a picnic in the backyard. Food tastes better when you haven’t had to make it yourself!
  5. Bath: Run Mum a bath and give her time to herself to read or relax.
  6. And a bonus one – hugs and kisses! We don’t often remember to say thank you everyday but lets make sure Mum knows on Mother’s Day just how grateful you are for everything that she does for you.

These can easily be used for Grandmothers too.

  • We always encourage a money free day. The kids think really hard about what they can make me and it ends up being more thoughtful this way. Today I got two handmade cards, a coffee mug we already owned with my son’s drawing on it, and breakfast in bed!

  • Beautiful ideas! I’d much rather presents with a lot of thought & simple everyday things. I also like an experience together wether it be a family outing somewhere new or lunch at a new place that we’ve never tried before. I always think ‘something to remember’

  • What great ideas. Some people really stress over gift buying when they have no money. Good to see you can still spoil mum and not bankrupt yourself

  • 100% the thought that counts. I love this article. Yes, clean the house and bring me a wine haha that’s what I want :-)

  • I think the main thing is you are thinking of your Mum so the more personal you can make the gift the better. Often Mums want to make a photo book etc so make it for her or back up her photos or whatever it is that’s important to your Mum.

  • I really don’t want much for Mother’s Day. Going out with my family for a walk (hopefully with good weather) is already enough. If I don’t have to cook, even better! :-)

  • Absolutely.. it is the thought that counts and sometimes the time you put in.. don’t need to spend big time to show your love.
